Me too! She uses the foam egg shippers and double boxes plus peanuts and bubble wrap so the odds are good that some of the "18ish" will be in great shape.

Kim, so sorry your hatches were so rough. It bothers me that more of mine don't hatch but if I didn't try my breeds would be limited to hatchery chicks. Hatching is getting better up here but I've got lots of room for improvement.

@BCollie great about your hatch and you deserve some happier moments of late.

@capayvalleychick I can only imagine the frustration especially when you are trying so hard to preserve rare breeds.

Welcome all the new people I have not welcomed. This is the best thread because of the great people in it.

As a newcomer to chickens this year I have found this thread to be very useful.

It moves fast so if something gets missed please repost we wont mind.

I am so grateful we have so much shade. My girls all just loaf under the deck in the summer.... no idea what you would do with pigs. When I get home from dc I want to see if we can get a pig party organised!

I wasn't going to say anything, but I'm feeling like I never want to hatch anything ever again. I had eggs in the RCom, eggs in the Genesis, and under 3 broodies. Early on, the Genesis humidity kept fluctuating from 19-69%, so I took those eggs and put them in the RCom. One of the broodies didn't stick, so I lost those eggs.
Then, when I upped the humidity prior to hatch on the RCom, the temperature kept shooting up over 100-102. I unplugged & reset it twice, but it would not stay below 100. So, I put all those eggs under the broody whose eggs had not hatched. The third broody did hatch out 6-8 chicks. I just finished pulling out all the full term dead chicks from under the broody who had the RCom eggs.

In addition, I had 2 chicks and a pig die from the heat. I'm not a happy farmer at the moment. Too much death for me to keep a stiff upper lip.

It was a brutal heat wave this week! Woodland tied or beat a record on Tuesday.

Hatching can go that way sometimes. I have incubator space anytime you need to use it!

So guys, at what point do I give up on eggs that haven't so much as pipped yet? It's one Marans and all 4 Trader Joe's eggs. I looked them all over yesterday when taking the babies out of the bator and none have pips. Can't see anything this morning, either, but I didn't touch them this morning, just looked through the bator window. Tonight at 9 will be 48 hours past when they were supposed to hatch. I would hate to throw away fully developed eggs, but if they're dead then there's nothing I can do. So, when do I give up and throw them away?

&Thank you Tommysgirl and caychris I'm very glad to have some good things happening right now, especially after Darla's passing. The hatch is making it easier to be happy with her gone.

On another note, I've had no problem selling my babies. Yesterday someone bought a Marans and the Black Tailed Japanese, today someone is going to be buying all 3 Welsummers, and this weekend I have someone buying the rest of the Marans. I also have someone wanting to buy the Tolbunt Polish from me but we haven't set up a date yet.

Check for signs of life--tap each egg and listen for cheeping.

If you do not hear anything, you can either leave them until tomorrow or try the float test. If the eggs float and sometimes wiggle, then they are still good. Marans can take a day or two longer, but since the others hatched already it is not a good sign for that egg.

Don't just toss them though. Open them carefully from the big end. Sometimes you can find a live chick in the eggs.
