Ugh don't y'all hate bad broodies? My Maran hen decided to roost & 2/4 chicks got cold & died. I took the living ones away. & now my two blue orpingtons are taking turns sitting.... What the heck?!

Well my dels arrived at the feed store on the 26 of February which put today 16 weeks from that date. Ive read they tend to lay at 20 weeks. I guess I better start watching soon and get them out of sleeping in the nest box.

My first were hatchery strain and their hatch date was 5/15,,,I got my first eggs all the first week of December.

That's funny, I have 3 sharing a box right now too. They refuse to be separated, I've tried giving them each a box, but they move the eggs back into the same one. They growl and screech at me when I reach into their coop. Little tyrants.

They sound so great! I'm trying so hard to tell myself that i don't need more tiny egg layers.

Trying to catch up. I went camping and ended up coming home with an ear infection and pneumonia. Not feeling up to posting much.

Flowers of abba - so sorry to hear about your problems with a bear. I hope your fortifications prevent any more losses.

Hugs to you both !

Were the Delawares or some other breed.

Hatchery Delawares from My Pet Chicken. Your Mileage may vary of course depending on the strain the hatchery your feed store uses. My Breeder Del was hatched 3/31/13 and she started laying in November or December of last year. The heavier body birds will often mature more slowly and lay later. That first egg is a much anticipated and terribly exciting thing...some girls like to make you wait for it a little or a a LOT longer

@HappyChooks hope you feel better. So sorry your fun was cut short by a bug.

All 4 of my AM EE eggs that were still viable hatched. Two eggs were blue and I got a blue and a splash from them. Two were green and I got a blue and red and chipmunk from them. If current patterns hold they will all be cockerels however I am hoping that the streak will be broken.

Pictures of everyone will be coming soon...I wish I had some of your talents and some of your cameras and I hope you don't mind my phone pics.

Mine come from Privet Hatchery. Ive read a number of reviews from people who had their birds saying they lay right around 20 weeks. I would think weather and molt and other stresses could cause a longer period. It might also make significant difference if they are simply laying or have a roo as well.
