I didn't realize they were that expensive. I am sure I didn't pay that much when I bought mine at the Stockton Show some years back right after it was released. That was before the BCMs were admitted, But the Doms & BRs should be in any of them. They have been around for a long time. Maybe you could start with a cheaper older one & get a new one when the news are released.

I think that we bought ours at the same show, Karen! And yes, they were that expensive! Mine came with a crunched corner and it bothered me to spend that much for a book with a defect! Of course, now it has real signs of wear!

It does not look too good today. Thee of 5 Pita Pintas are developing but I only see development in 4 of the Ranger eggs. Shipping must have been rough on them. I wonder if the foam is the correct type. @chiqita posted that there is one good one that is sold.

I have not removed any of the ranger eggs and will make the final decision when I set them up for lockdown.

Pita Pinta chicks are so cute! I have them eating off of my finger. They chirp until I go to them and "feed" them too.

When I got eggs from her last spring she shipped in foam and I only had 3 of 11 hatch but that was also my first and mostly failed time incubating and it was done in a LG still air. I was only expecting 10 eggs...that was what the auction was for so getting 18 was a bonus. I am fine with whatever I get. I was quite stressed thinking about all 23 hatching. I do hope for as many as possible but will not be saddened by whatever happens.

I figure it like this: I get way more fun over a way longer period of time out of hatching than I would if I spent the same amount of money on a night out. So even if a hatch nets nada...I still get my money's worth.

@caychris As far as pattern goes with Barred breeds the pattern is supposed "link" from feather to feather so that the bird looks more striped like this:


Whereas a Dom is a cuckoo breed. Their markings don't form continuous lines from feather to feather so they are less uniform like this:

So, as you guys may know I have a Cream Legbar and a Black Copper Marans. My mom and I both agree that they are about half the size of the adult chickens right now. Ron said to wait until they were 3/4 the size of the adult chickens before leaving them out together all the time, and this is what I planned on doing...however, I GIVE UP! Actually, I gave up about a week ago. They keep getting out of their grow-out pen and joining the flock. They've been out with the flock for about a week now and nobody has been injured, so at this point I think it's safe to say they're going to be fine to live out with the adult flock full-time. They know who the meanest girl is(the speckled sussex is downright nasty towards them) and know to run away when she goes towards them. But, things seem to be going really well and the adult girls are even letting the little girls eat food and treats without pecking at them! I think they're going to be okay.
My concern is this...their food. They know where the big girls food is, and so for the past week they've been eating layer feed. I know this is bad for them since they haven't started laying yet, they're only about 3 months old. What do I do about this?

Good Job integrating them!

Add another feeder for the little ones.

None of the dom pictures I saw made it as clear. Of course seeing them side by side really helps

When the current bag of layer runs out, switch to grower or flock raiser and provide free choice calcium. Layer for a short time will not hurt the 3 month old chicks.

They will be fine.

I saw that someone mixes DE in with the feed. What kind of ratio and how do you do that.
