Well I made one of those bucket air conditioners and I will say the airflow is decent (if you get a good fan) the real trick is the foam liner and use ice cubes rather than a block of ice. You need surface area to get good cool air.

Im going to make another one one will go inside the coop the other to the are underneath,

I also got some misters and am going to get a box fan. This weeks heat wave is really going to test things.
Im also getting sand to put into the run and underneath the coop. Going to add DE to it when I put it down.

Im also going to add more permanent shade to the run this week.

I really need to get rid of the fosters their coop is actually shadier but since its portable I was considering moving it to the garage for some time to let the DELS back into it there to avoid more of the heat and the Buffs can go back to the empty brooder. Chickies can stay in the house through the week. (planning on that anyway).

Im hoping the air conditioned coop will be enough for them to stay inside.

Momma chilling with her chicks .....

Hard boiled egg's for breakfast .....

Okay enough is enough but just look at the wing feathering development and not even a week old yet .....

hello folks! i've been incredibly busy lately & am completely lost in this thread now, and will be flying to NY next week for a vacation at my sister's house, so will likely get way behind again, but:

-- all my condolences, Jason!

-- had a great day of processing chickens with Deann aka @juststruttin and her friends in Sebastopol on wednesday, we did a total of about 40 birds -- I'm feeling increasingly comfortable with it all (although haven't done the actual killing yet), and have to say, WOW, having a real plucker makes the process SO much easier.

-- wonderful to meet Barbara aka @tommysgirl yesterday, when she visited my house to pick up 8 mostly-marans chicks -- hope they are settling in to their new home!

and in case anyone here is a subscriber to the Wall Street Journal, I'm quoted in an article about the oyster farm controversy this morning:

hope everyone has a fabulous Fourth of July week!

Welcome back and congrats on the article! I am impressed!
I tried to make him eat like i did the other day abd hr wouldnt and hes just been like convulsing in his box.. i culled him the way i do whennn i process roosters... ddoes me it make me a bad person that i culled him?he couldnt eat or drink and was just fflqiling hisneck And looking like he was seizing so i deiced on not allowing him to suffer. sprry for the spelling im crying
I think that was the right thing to do and was going to say it sounds like it was time. It most certainly does NOT make you a bad person.

Why couldnt it of been one of the extra roos who was gonna get processed anyway?

Awww....how cute!

Im about to cover under the coop with sand and DE how should I add the DE should I put the sand out and just sprinkle DE. the space is about 4'x4' how much should I use?

I also adding Sand to the run area where I am going to put up the mister. (Rather than have mud chickens) about 6'x5'.

Anyone know if the Peepers actually work? My other roosters comb had healed completely from previous pecking . No scabs just softer tissue.
Put on blue kote and in 1 hour the hens pecked holes in it again on each side.
I can make the boys hats but I'm worried that might affect them cooling down in the heat.
Help please :)

The reports are that they work.

Did you up the Animal protein for them?

Costco sells Natures Domain cat food and the first ingredient is Salmon Meal.

TSC has Calf Manna on sale for $30.00 for 50 pounds and has whey protein in it.

My daughter says mottled white :-( I am in bed ,threw my back out In the process...
I'll recheck when I can. Is it possible to use him to get a yellow leg cockerel or does he have to scat now?
Ah what to do what to do!

You can use him if the females have yellow legs. Leg color is not terrible as long as some have yellow.

They already have nice shape and great growth and egg production. We need to make sure we keep that as we work on the colors.
