California - Northern

Just weighed a big double-yolker egg laid 4/14: 99 grams! Oof.
I believe it was the black English orpington who done it.

That is a huge egg!

Successful hatch! 8 Pita Pintas, 6 Splash&Blue Marans, and for a friend, 3 Spitzhaubens and 2 Black Marans! Penny (hen below) did half the work, but then took all my 14 total chicks. She did seem a bit startled when they multiplied suddenly, but is managing like a trooper! :D Marans daddy VeLo even stood and let the chicks run all over his feet so Penny could take a dust bath! Nice to see...
Yay for you. So cool!

I live near Sacramento and consider myself Northern. My chickens seem to love the weather here except for the hot summers. They like it under the coop in the summer.

You are in Norther California! The weather is great for chickens--except for some that are not heat hardy.

Post pictures when you can.

These are adorable.

I just moved my 8 pullets from their "stage 2 brooder" to their permanent run/coop. Here is the problem last night and tonight when I go to check on them they are all snuggled up in the corner of the run NOT in the coop! I have to move them to the coop where the settle nicely. Before they qoild.finder their brooder fine once it started getting dark.

Here is the background of living quarters:

At 3 weeks moved them to an outdoor cold frame that we slightly modifeD. We had the sides screened in for ventilation but at night they could be shut. One side could Side could.slide all the way open. The heat lamp was in there but they had lots of rooM to go about their buisness. As the days warmed.I started opening the side and they would go in and out as they pleased.

Last weekend we finished the coop (8x4) and run. The run is along side our garage and is completely wired. The ruN is 12x6 (also 6 feet high) and that is not counting the room along side and behind the coop which is all in the same area.

I don't worry about predators much during the day because our lab and kids are out all day and something would really have to work at getting in but at night I want them shut in the coop where I KNOW a racoon can't get to them. I donot think a coon can get into the run BUT at night I won't take the chance.

So how long until my ladies go into their new home by them selves?

*sorry for the long post*

The fastest way to get them to go into the coop is to lock them in for three days. Moving them in each night will take a couple of weeks and sometimes they will just not get it.
