My daughter was convinced she want Andalusians. We could not get them re-homed soon enough! They would fly into the fencing everytime I went to feed them. I always talk to the girls when working outside, those Andy's just never learned!

wow, I never thought of that.... I have 14 big Australorps and they just walk around me and my dog... my dog, Lucy, actually watches over them... do you know if Black Cooper Marans are large birds?.....Rae

There are quite a few folks here with Marans, I don't have any myself. I'm more accustomed to birds flying at me rather than away from me.

I got the 3 Basque hens integrated into the Barred Rocks. A little dust up between the head hen and my sweetheart roo, then all was fine. I figured they would get along OK, even the 1 with a bad eye has been accepted, I love it when a plan works out.

I re-arranged pigeons and now have a second pair of Mookees. I hope they will give me more wee ones next year. A few Modena babies would be welcome also.

Well tonight went the same as last night, only 13 on the roost, so I went around and found her in the corner under the waterer... I picked her up and put her on the roost with the others.... Do you think that the other hens are not letting her up there? My husband and I were trying to remember how long that 2x4 is,but of corse we can't,so tomorrow we're going to check it out. If I remember right they need one foot per bird...right?

I kinda of enjoy getting to pick one up because they feel so soft and silky....lol

I would say they are average sized. Mine are smaller than an Orpington, but larger than my Welsummers.

My best egg layers are my Pita Pinta, my Cream Legbar, and my Pita Pinta/Cream Legbar mixes. They fill my egg basket with brown, blue, and green eggs!

I have to agree--for long term so far. My three year old Pita Pinta Hens still lay a good amount of eggs.

In the short term, The 6 that I hatched from trader joes eggs out lay all of them! They may not lay well after this year though. They are a strain of commercial leghorn hens with commercial brown egg laying Roosters. They are similar to Austra whites with one of them having blue splotches and another one having some red feathers. They are 4 light brown egg layers and two pearl white egg layers.

I will likely hatch out some more this January--Worked out great this year.

If she is in good health, I would wait until they get more in. I have had broodies sit for 4 and 5 weeks on nothing and they are fine. IMO the younger the chicks the better.

i may do that but, i know she may acsept the week old chicks, but if they don't come in than i have a problem, she wont adopt 2 week old chicks, and my local chicken store won't have them for a month.
