They like the moist sand the best.
I love the end where one stick both it's feet up.

Well, we seem to be having some success in the battle with the mites. We moved the broody coop to another part of the yard (it's a movable a-frame) & my husband hosed the whole thing off & powdered it again with Permethrin & replaced the bedding again.

He gave both broodies a flea bath with flea & tick shampoo for dogs, then powdered them again & put them back on the eggs. They really loved their bath; they sat there with their little eyes closed in the warm shower like "ahhhhh." I still saw 1 mite on the coop this morning so I think we will powder it again tomorrow, but it looks like it will be ok for the chicks to hatch there. Then we will move them to another area after the chicks hatch.

They are due to hatch on Friday so fingers crossed they will do ok.

I understand mites are pretty tough to rid. Keep up the treatment and clean out the coop every day. Lice are easier to kill but mites will hide in the smallest creases and crevices of wood housing and come out at night again to feast on the birds. It'll take just a couple-three mites to restart infestation but diligence in treatment will be well worth the effort. GL!

lived a few different places mainly right downtown i always loved being close to the activities they held down there! i loved napa the weather was AMAZING but i moved up to lake county to have my family (my 2 toddler boys)although the weather is much more severe here. i like the small urban area up here its not so chaotic as a town or city... plus i have my 6 dogs goats and chickens here i dont think i could find a house in Napa with all my animals lol!

So I went outside to check on the broodies. We are on Day 19 now. I opened up the coop door & lo & behold, I found a THIRD hen sitting on the eggs instead of the other two. One of the original 2 broodies was standing to the side and staring at the new broody with a very confused look on her face like "What are you doing here?"

Hopefully she just went in there to lay an egg cause I know she likes to lay in there. I don't want to deal with 3 hens trying to hatch the same clutch of eggs!

Lisa, you have such a neat assortment of animals! I want to come visit someday. Those doves are beautiful also! Kern

One hatched early! She is all fluffy & happy with her 2 mamas. I think she is blue although it's hard to tell at night.
