California - Northern

I'm sick too! Coughing, fever, tired. Is this what you had? How long did it last?

I hope you are doing better now. I had a very sore throat, in addition to all that, so think it was the flu. The worst lasted about 4 days and I still have lingering respiratory issues.

Reading about all the special care you all do for your chickens, I'm amazed any of mine are still alive.

I use a heat lamp with my brooder chicks but never have been able to regulate the heat like recommended. I do watch the chicks' behavior to try to tell if they're comfortable. I move the lamp a little farther away each week, then start leaving it off for longer & longer periods.

I don't like to medicate or use poison unless absolutely necessary. I haven't seen any parasites, so haven't treated for them. I did put out a DE dust bath before taking a couple to a show. The one time I had a fecal test done with the chickens, there weren't any parasites, even though I had never wormed them. I do need to have another done.

I used to routinely worm all my livestock with Ivermectin. Since I started testing, I've found that I was over medicating. I think the multi species rotational grazing management system that I do is preventing a parasite load in all the critters. That's my theory anyway. I might just be lucky that I haven't killed all my chickens from neglect.

Enjoy your weekend!

We are going to the South Fork of Stony Creek on Monday. We will hike to the creek and fish. We usually bring home Lady Bugs.

Four of my five Basque Cockerels are friendly. Three of them have yellow legs and two of them look like they are good breeding to improve the standard. It's kind of early to tell for sure though. You can have one of the three with the yellow legs. That will give you a breeding trio of Basque Hens.

The only Basque hens in the US are the Marraduana. I hatched mine from eggs sold by James Meeks. He is Skyline on BYC and is the major seller of EO Basque eggs in the US. Three of us hatched his eggs for the Easter Hatch this year. The Marraduna are a dual purpose egg laying breed.

I will get pictures of the Pullets later today. One of them is a Mille Fleur. I need to finish the shopping.

Collecting lady bugs on your hike? That sounds amazing!! I looked up images for Millie Fleur.. Cute! There are so many interesting chickens out ther. I would absolutely love to have a breeding trio and help to improve the standard! We are going to Spain this summer to visit family. I wish I had the guts to smuggle back some eggs!

Quote: It's a Mille Fleur like pattern, still a Basque. The colors and patterns will change as they get older. Other EO Basque owners have some very different colors and patterns. Mine are all fairly Standard. Some others have more brown and white ones.

I separated yours today. Here are two pictures of the pullets:

Some pictures of all six of them:

They started getting to close to a rose bush, so I called them and the came back to me. They are seven weeks old.

Omg Ron they're GORGEOUS! Especially my two! :-P My excitement has tripled!

Any pics of the cockerel you're thinking of?

Thanks for posting the pictures. What amazing and beautiful creatures!!

Ok Meg, I took them back out for pictures of the three.

He is going to be a nice big boy. He has yellow feet too!

Nice color and shape is good.

They are already good foragers. I watched them catch some flying bugs too.

Bye,

Ron
