California - Northern

I have 1 RIR 2 Barred rocks, 2 Buff chicks (thinking they might be orps) and two seemingly leghorn looking chicks. I've been having to work the most with them because they seem to be very flighty and when we got them they were maybe 4 or 5 days old so I was already behind on socializing them! But, they are getting better everyday!

This spring, we ended up with a white Leghorn that was sold as a Delaware. We're not unhappy, because she will be our only white egg layer, and she is very friendly toward us. At 14 weeks, she flew about 25 feet across the chicken yard and over a 6 foot fence. Thankfully, I happened to be looking out the window and raced outside to get her before the dogs. It was close, and I think she was scared enough that she will not try it again soon. Do chickens have long memories?

HI! I'm new to this site, and felt that the Northern California forum would be a great place to meet other Californians. I just started out raising my own chickens but I've been a poultry enthusiast ever since I took a poultry production course at Fresno State! I'm so happy to have found a site with so much information and full of others who share a similar passion!

Welcome to the thread

My concern to move on treating soon is, and maybe I read incorrectly, but don't you now have 3 with symptoms?

I also wouldn't wait. It seems to have spread to multiple chicks pretty quickly. If I remember, it was one chick and you kept one more that maybe had problems, but also as company. Now you have three that are ill. They aren't very old and need supportive care as quickly as possible. I wouldn't feel comfortable with letting nature take it's course in this case.

1 RIR, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Buff somethings ( The feedstore thought Buff was a breed.. But they seem like orps) and 2 yellow chicks that are starting to look like Leghorns ( the feed store told me they were something WAY off haha) They are so much fun!

I once bought a Cuckoo Marans pullet from the feedstore that was an Australorp cockerel............

Hmmm, another person on the Neveda? thread had this smelly breath issue as well as the other symptoms you've mentioned. My concern to move on treating soon is, and maybe I read incorrectly, but don't you now have 3 with symptoms? If you can treat with Wasabichick's recipe that would be great. Oh, and her chickens recovered after antibiotics, so that's good news.
I thought I did but the one I thought was hanging her mouth open- is now not? And not acting funny in anyway. The 4 that are separated (healthy) are acting totally fine. My 2 'sickies' are still acting incredibly alert, eating like pigs and drinking fine. Pooping normal. Not sleeping more than normal- maybe a little bored because they have been going outside during the day. Tonight my Marans criiiiiied when night hit- he knew 4 of his buddies were missing. He just made this horribly loud noise standing at the door of the brooder 'crying'. He stopped after about an hour. Maybe they ate something funky? I would have thought the Marans would get worse but he still the same as he was this morning. Just sadder lol. The Orp although he had a bad chunk of time this afternoon - it passed on it's own and he also seems slightly better at this point- less mouth breathing...gosh this is all stressful!

Ok, I'm looking to solve a mystery so I was hoping some of you would play guess the breed in the following pics. I have two random chickens pop up from some chicks that I ordered that were not what they were supposed to be. The seller is telling me that what I think they are is not possible. So, what do you guys think?

Here is the pic the day they arrived.

Her are some pics a week or so later. This is the chick I am wondering what you guys think in regard to breed?
And just some more shots to get a feel for the group:
The second chick in question below:

So, what do you think?
I will post the pictures of the chicken now sometime tomorrow so you can see if you were right! :-)

OK Papa B, very limited experience, but am thinking the mystery chicks are Buff Orpington. Looks very much like the girl we raised this spring. Extra fluffy head, light legs, and buffy color.

Will find out tomorrow!

I am clueless to the rest but that first one I call Buff Orpington. I only have 10 of them hehe.

SO exciting! If they are Buff Orpingtons, the flighty-ness should subside... thats my experience at least. I'm sure just a lot of your voice & some hand feeding will calm them.
Probably just need time to settle in.

Mystery chicks are so exciting!

(Sorry I am of no help, PAPA! My guess would be BO also because thats the only kind I have that looked like that, but I've only had 8 or 9 different breeds out of the hundreds!)
