Really cute.. I have the hardest time sexing my EE.. Any tricks?:/

I have no idea. :/ These look like pullets to me since their combs are sooo little, not red and wattles are also extremely small.

Quote: Amy Beth?...the Produce manager said that too many people are too afraid to ask for the scraps! He said they just have to throw them away! It's a waste! We're going back there more often! You have to explain that it's for your chickens! I hope you can take advantage of this perk! ~David and Wendy
Worth a shot. Might as well hit up all te local stores if I get no's! Excuse my typos. Sent from my iPhone.

With the EEs, you can tell by looking at the comb: Pullets have one little row of peas. Cockerels usually have three rows and the comb will be bigger an redder sooner. They are tough to tell until fairly old, but the ones Amy Got form me are all pullet.

They are probably so nice because I raised them with a Wyendotte. the GLW is the calmest thing I have ever seen.

They look amazing!

I'm sure all of you already know it but we didn't until today! While shopping at our local Albertsons grocery store we bought some veggies for our Chooks! The Produce manager heard us talking and said "are you looking for produce for your chickens?". He said that they have veggies that don't qualify for the food bank for humans and we could have all we want! He said that most stores throw away tons of veggies that would be great for chickens and they are more than happy to give it away! Here's what they gave us today! Wendy is chopping it up and bagging it as we speak! What the chickens don't eat out mealworms and composting red worms will get! ~David and Wendy

Thank you for mentioning this!
Ugh!

We even went on a field trip to a grocery store and saw

all the produce they throw out. I didn't have chickens at the time and never thought of it until your post. I spend about $10 a week on produce or frozen veggies that could be spent on my family. I will be visiting my neighborhood Safeway and BelAir today for some chicken food. (With today's prices, we would be foolish not to take advantage of this.)

Thank you again for the post!

This is great!

I saw someone getting old produce form our Grocery Outlet. I was told that in Davis the Co Op will give away old and blemished produce. I am going to check on this today at the Grocery Outlet.

Happy Saturday!

Yet another foggy day today... 52 degrees... no sun.... and the max has got to be 64 today.

So I heard some a pair of broilers sold for $2,000 at auction... so I have decided to do broilers/meaties this upcoming 2013 year. Since it's constant 50-69 degree weather here. And inland where the fairs are it's 70-113 degrees.... does anybody have any advice I could use to get the broilers used to the heat?

I was thinking just a heat lamp even though I sell them at 6-8 weeks.

That is amazing!

The dixon May Fair is in well May so is usually fairly cool for a fair. I don't know about conditioning them but your heat lamp idea may be a good one. I would not use it over 90 and not all day long.

I've lost two birds this week for no apparent reason, I can only conclude it's the heat. That is despite spraying down the runs every hour or so and dumping/refilling their water with cool at least once per day.

(and I wasn't really mad at you, just jealous and teasing)

My son was one of those lucky ones in 4-H. One year he won both Grand & Reserve Grand Champion meat pens. When his champion pen went to auction, he got $2,000. We have very dedicated supporters of 4H here and our auctions do very well.

I don't believe there is any way to acclimate meaties to the heat, you just need to keep them cool as much as possible. If they are hot, they won't eat. If they don't eat, they won't gain properly. Let me know if you need any advice on raising, selecting meat pens. We got pretty good at it.
