Yes, I would wait and watch them. They are quarantined and not suffering so it would be best to let them recover there. The Panting may have caused moisture to come up from their crop. Just guessing but I think they were on their way out yesterday.

Good job, you saved them once again!

Ok. I will do that. I hope they don't die. But if I only lose 1 or 2 this Summer- I think I should be grateful. And whatever birds make it thru are definitely proving their heat hardiness lol. Those little EEs man- panting like mad. I come out and visit them all the time. They rush up to the coop wall - like let us out of here! They are at the bottom of the pecking order and very very submissive to the others. I feel bad for them. They are last to eat and drink. We bring yummies every night (usually veggies scraps) and I make sure they get more than the others. But they are perky, outgoing with us, seem vigorous and are not getting beat up or anything. So I guess they are ok?

random question for those of you more-experienced chicken-keepers: I'm a bit concerned that two of my chicklets, the delaware & one of the SPPRs, may actually be boys -- they both are showing small wattles that are quite pink/red, and the SPPR has a pinker/brighter comb than the other, although no larger. at 11 or so weeks, what other kinds of signs of cockerel-ness should/might be showing?

thanks for any suggestions! i will try to take photographs later today but am not quite sure what i should be looking at/for...

We found a puppy. I am waiting to hear from the owner to go pick her up- hopefully today. It's a female 8 week old pit bull. We slaved over breeds, researched, weighed everything...and we feel good about it. We have looked at several but this one just seems to fit us the most right now. :) We haven't told many people because when people here the words pit and bull- they freak. Dogs are usually as good or as bad as their owners. We had a Rottweiler. Strong breed, strong-willed, big dog, bullheaded, stubborn, aggressive tendencies, protects it's people and does best when you give it a job. The biggest disservice dog owners do to their dogs is not the understanding the breed they got. Bull terriers are working dogs- like dobes and rotts and some others. Train them, be firm and give them a job. We are very excited. The kids are over the moon. They have never gotten to do the puppy thing before. :D My husband already picked out her name (he has never once gotten to name any of our pets over our 16 year marriage so far) it was so cute to watch him agonize over names.

Alice. Alice the pit baby. I hope to have pics to share later! Stay cool everyone!

sounds so exciting! alice is my mom's name, & my middle name -- it's a good name for a good dog. hooray for you guys!

It's SO funny. We love all our birds- even the Marans. Especially BCM boys- they are sweet as pie! But the EEs have absolutely stolen EVERYone's hearts. How funny is that?? I cannot wait to get some more next year!!

We feel the same way about our EE. She is the lowest on the pecking order but has such an outgoing personality. Even with all those feathers around her face, she doesn't seem too troubled by the heat. Monkey is definitely the family favorite, and she lays such pretty eggs.

Congratulations on your impending puppy! I think pits tend to get overlooked as good pets because of the rep earned by their irresponsible owners. We've had several pit crosses, and they've all been wonderful dogs (and are not troubled by the heat!). Alice does not yet know how lucky she is to have such a great family!

Hope your chicks feel better today!

I am happy to know it's not just our EEs that maybe the 'breed' in general is like this. So that means others we get may tend to be like this. That makes me happy.

And I agree about the way pits are viewed. A few other breeds get bad raps (shoot even geese have a bad rap) too. I have seen some people get hound dogs, then get angry at their dog because it trees cats and runs off all the time. Ummm...you do know what kind of dog you have right? Train them but also understand what is instinctively bred into them- you know? Then pick a pet whose traits mesh with your lifestyle, family dynamic, location etc.

I have a feeling I will have to answer this a lot. I already have by a close friend...why a pit. Why not a boxer? But to that I ask why a boxer and why not a pit? haha

Ah well. It's supposed to be 111 on Tuesday. In the chicken coop it was like 115 yesterday. :| We put a thermometer out there in the shade- poor chickens!

<----- That's your neighbor if you have roosters!

Chickens, like people, can develop at different rates (Remember that one girl in 5th grade who looked so much more "womanly" than everyone else?). So you might still have pullets.

Close up pics of comb/wattles will help. Side views are good. Full body profiles also help, to see tail feathers and overall stance. Cockerels will grow shiny, thin, and sharply pointed saddle and hackle feathers so you could check to see if any of those are coming in, but it might be a bit too soon. Also, if the adult rooster of the breed is a different color than the hen, they might start showing those colors at 12 weeks. (Unfortunately, I don't think your 2 breeds in question have sexual dimorphism for color. Not sure, though.)

Thinking girly thoughts for you!

Amy, everyone should have EEs! They are mutts and are crazy tough little guys. They are resistant and can make through heat and cold

They also lay very pretty eggs.

They are great for getting used to raising chickens.

I will either get you Basqie chicks or hatching eggs this spring.

you're exactly right about the neighbor! rather than scream i think he might just explode.

so i tried to take some photos, although the only digital camera i have is my iphone, and they were all suspicious of me suddenly trying to get close to them with this shiny thing... but here are the two SPPRs, their combs/wattles are about the same size, but bella's are much brighter:

and here's lucy -- i don't see any particularly pointed or shiny feathers, but her legs are very thick (nice bright yellow), and her comb/wattles are also looking brighter than the others':

last one, showing lucy's face & also frances, the other SPPR, with bella in between them (i gave them some black sunflower seeds; initial suspicion became a feeding frenzy):

any/all opinions welcome!
