California - Northern

apologies for the duplicate posting to those on the all state California thread, but I just noticed that mycutekitties started a Paso Robles thread a few weeks ago - let's use that as a "what are you bringing to the show" thread for those who are interested in bringing birds to sell. I went ahead and posted the birds that I am planning to bring, and am interested in seeing what others are bringing! You know, sell one, buy two, never go home with an empty cage, etc etc.

looked it up where? my field guides are at school, but i'm pretty sure weasels are not-super-common but present almost anywhere in non-urban areas in the west... google "weasel skull" and look at the images, it looks pretty similar...

This is what I use for looking up what critters are in my area:

You are right, it does look like that's what it could be. I just had no idea that they were here. Good to know that they eat rodents. Thanks!

I am very fortunate to not have as much of a problem with predators as most people.

Extreme cuteness!!!

How does she like the the chicks and the other cats? Hope your arm is healing.

since she's just a baby i'm keeping her indoors for the time being, so she hasn't met the chickens yet -- and she's fine with the older cats, but they are... disgruntled about her arrival -- so they're pouting outdoors. seems like they will all get along fine once we get through this initial phase...

and arm is almost better, thanks!

looks like a great source -- so handy to have research universities around! at the last place i lived, over in sebastopol, there was a resident weasel in the abandoned lot next door -- happily living off gophers, i'm sure!

Quote: If you are interested in some rescue cats as hunters you may want to check out Another Chance rescue in Palo Cedro. They usually have tons of cats/kittens with very low adoption fees or even free adoptions specials at times. Their cats come spayed/fixed or will be when older for free and have at least their first vaccinations, wormed, flea treatment and tested for common diseases. I got my last two kittens from them (one of my kittens was rescued from a dumpster!). Like most rescues they would prefer to have the cats allowed indoors. But, I think they will still adopt out cats as "barn cats" as long as you agree to provide shelter, food and other basic care. I found that some humane societies will refuse to let you adopt if you even allow the cats to go outside.

When my kids are just a little older, I want to foster a pregnant cat from them and then adopt the momma and maybe a kitten or two from the litter.

PS My sister has a broodie hen and is looking for some hatching eggs from some "fancy eggs" for her to sit on. Neat egg colors or even just good egg layers. She's kind of leaning towards breeds like Marans, Welsummers, green/blue egg layers etc. Just for a "back yard" flock so a mix of breeds would be fine. Thanks:)

Trisha - I only have 2 welsummer girls laying right now - 1 pullet and 1 hen. (the rest are molting) I've hatched from the pullet eggs (under my 3 broodies) and fertility is still excellent. I have a hen that lays green in another coop (barnevelder flock), but not sure on fertility for those as my rooster is molting too. A couple of weeks earlier and I could have offered black sex link eggs too, but my BR is now molting.

I could put together what I have if that is what your sister wants.

hello everyone!

Ron, those are great pictures, you guys should be putting in stuff for the calandar. I love looking at the pics on this thread, such great photographers.

Monster, I know you would be taking care of the cats! I would never have recomended Laurie otherwise, shes hyper. ( not in a bad way) Its one of those things you just want to say immediatly ( barn cats! food water and love provided but i'm allergic) so they don't blow you off. There is a certian way to approach rescues so you don't have a hassle. They see so much they are jaded, I think. And the cats that fit what you want are so terribly hard to place it will be wonderful to find them homes. The people who take care of colonies do such a tough job emotionally they are always so happy to find a place for the special ones.

Trisha,
Where are you? I also have Marans and Olive Eggers here. But it depends on who is closer. ( we are in San Jose, but Ill be in SF tomorrow or could give eggs to my mum going to Marin to pick up over the weekend) And as for fostering a pregnant cat, its SOOO fun! I used to do bottle babies, I hope to start again next season. Its a few weeks of low sleep, but very rewarding.

Chooklit, how are your quail babies? So glad you are keeping some, it will be fun!

As for chickenland here:

Snotty is almost 100% better, and would like to go outside, but no dice for her. Shes enjoying all teh mash and warm water and treats I've been trying to use to get purples to eat. Spoiled thing has started jumping on my lap as soon as I get in there to demand food. If this keeps up she is going to be a rolly polly chicken. But she is thin too so i'm not stopping her. Poor thing is probaly going to be stuck with the name snotty forever now, how undignified.

Purples is still borderline, but I've been syringe feeding and watering her after instruction at the vet. Gruel with rooster booster and boiled water with a bit of sugar. She isnt worse, and shes still around, and she did pick at food yesterday, but didn't eat enough to help. But its better. She wont be out of the woods till she will drink on her won, if its not soon i don't know what happens. I don't know how long she can just hang on, but she doesn't seem to be in pain, so onward we go. She really hates the feeding and somehow her whole sour attitude is encourageing. If she was so litless she didn't fight me I'd probaly give up, but her outrage tells me she has enough in her to recover if whatever it is will go away! the vet said she thougth the respitory that we are treating was secondary, but you'd need blood tests to tell more. She called yesterday to make sure the feeding was going ok, very helpful.

On the better news front, I got 2 cream legbar eggs yesterday! I think its one chicken laying and I missed a day, becuse I left them in the coop for a couple of days trying to convince them to go there to sleep. They laughed that off, but at least they layed! So, will I need to get light out there for them, or if they start laying this late will they continue? I guess I will find out. I had to do light last year, but the girls started to lay in November, much darker.

My last broody is due any day now, shes been sitting for almost a month and getting annoyed at me . They would go into lockdown today if my maths is right.

Hopefully I will have better news next week. Thank you guys for listening to me!

Some egg pictures, washed out, but gives you an idea.

Congratulations on the eggs! How exciting to hear.

I posted two pictures for the calendar today. There are a lot of pictures up there now!

I ... am doing little happy dance! My last two chickens have been saved from the cooking pot! We're moving back to Dunsmuir for the winter and I have no place to keep my chickens down there, so I was expecting to have to butcher them in a week or two. My cousin came up a few days ago and said he'd take them in for the winter, since it was just the two. So sweet! I'm sure his little girl will have a blast collecting the eggs from my hen since she's an EE. Just thought I'd share the good news!
