Happy October, Everyone!
Here is a picture to make you think of autumn (since the weather sure won't)..........it's especially for you Zooweemomma!

I woke up at 3 am this morning (and yes, I looked in the incubator too.)

I'm glad I did, because there were 3 pips!

Tomorrow is actual hatchday so was I ever surprised! It's a good thing we were at Apple Hill for several hours or I would have worn out the maglite looking for action! When we got home, there were 4 pips and one was zipping. And now, that first blue/black silkie has the top off "HER" shell and is resting!

Is that a broody brown leghorn?

And wow, that is nice lacing on the Partridge Rock for being from a hatchery. I considered moving to Partridge Rocks for breeding, but my love of Barnevelders won out, so I will continue with them instead.

I love broodies in ones and two's, but 3 at once is a bit much to ask and requires some special attention. (lost a chick with 2 broodies that were fighting over chicks) I've had 8 broodies total this year and I'm really hoping for a little break.
That Broody hen may have some brown leghorn mixed in so good eye! Mixing in Leghorns of different colors is how many of our Heritage breeds are getting messed up.

If you set the eggs before noon, that day counts as day one. I am willing to bet that they are right on time. Go here an punch in your set date:

What day did you get for hatching?

After waiting all year, I finally had more than one chick hatched out by a (surrogate) broody. Sorry I take such poor pics, but I wanted to share any way.

Awe, I love when they sit on the broodies back. I had a hen that also sat for 5 weeks to finally get chicks and when they were about 3 weeks the raccoon got them. Poor thing wandered for 3 days calling for them.
