Here's my contender for the worst molt Ron:

Awesome!

My BA has lost the feathers on the neck and has the pin feathers sticking out. She looks like someone plucked her!

Yours is starting to look like that too.

When I went to the Heirloom expo, Chiquita gave me some hatching eggs. They hatched last week and I have 5 nice little chicks. A couple days ago my 13 year old asked if she could pick up the one that looked like a duck. I said What? You know the one without feathers on the Neck.

What is that thing!

Do I have a Show Girl?
OMG, Quote finally worked!
I think you have a show BOY.
One of my roosters only one out of 2 silked genes. So he has regular feathers but still has silked chicks most of the time. He is the one that is soo good with the babies and the girls, iggy. He is usualy not allowed into silkieland anymore but he does sneak in on occation. ( our olive egger young ones jump the fence to join their mother and they trashed it so the silkies can jump back too, its a project for some time this month) He is wearing a diaper now, but it may come off, because I think the feathers are sex linked. I am not 100% sure, but so far ALL of the ones that have non silked feathers are boys. I have about 12 so far that we have kept, and 2 that came back as roosters, no one has told me they got a hen.

They are really cute when they grow up. I'm trying to decide if weeding out boys early is worth it or not. You can tell once the pin feathers come in so its fairly fast. Unlike most silkes that take about 5 mths before you have a clue.

I must have grabbed the silke eggs I got you off the counter, and not from the basket....

Capayvalleychick,

Hi Kim!

There is strange little feed store in Yolo County, owned by Duane Chamberlain, one of our supervisors. Do they have bulk chicken feeds? Or do you know anything about them. I might remember something about them having Nutrina.

Bye,

That's Windmill Feed. They sell hay, that is grown by DC. They also have bagged feeds, including Nutrena & supplies. It's not a mill. There's another feed store in Esparto, Millron Feed. Nice people, they do try to carry whatever people want, but it has to make them some profit. They are so small that their prices are a bit high.

There is an actual mill in Williams, Colusa County. Bar Ale Feeds. They will do custom mixes but have a high minimum- several tons. They don't have fish meal. They're a traditional mill that caters to the traditional livestock producers. Many of their feeds are medicated.

I didn't know that McMurray carried fish meal. Their price is higher than Concentrates Inc. in Portland OR. The Fertrell dealer in WA used to get me anything from Concentrates Inc. at a reduced price. But then there's a high shipping cost. Plus the fish meal has almost doubled in price.

I think Modesto Milling may be the best option, IF they will do a custom mix and if they can get a hold of fish meal. My chickens did not do well on their regular feed.

Thanks Kim!

Agreed about the Modesto Milling feed. If we could get them to custom make the Cascade feed that would be great. My hens prefer the Cascade feed over the Wheat! Usually they eat it first but today they are ignoring it.

It is great stuff.

Bye,
