Ron - we are too cold for citrus, so we planted some mandarin's and some orange's at the MIL's house in Newcastle. Their area is prime mandarin area! They are young trees though, so we haven't gotten much off of them yet. As soon as I get a greenhouse, the first occupant of it is going to be a meyer lemon bush! I'll have to wheel it out in the summer, but it will be worth it for the lemons.

I found a variety of avocado that is cold tolerant down to 20 degrees. I'm so tempted to try it.

I have so many Oranges this year! This is the third year that the first one has set oranges. The new one is going on three years, so it should have oranges next year.

The neighbor that shares our North west corner has a lemon tree that hangs over our yard. They do not harvest them but we are sure to get every one that hangs over our yard! My youngest makes lemonade and I make lemon curd, pie, Dobash(cajun version of the French Doberge Torte) cake and etc. from them. I always have lemons in the house. You will love having a Lemon Tree.

I didn't get any of it from my Mom either. I always thought she was a good cook until I grew up and learned the difference. She never canned a thing in her life or baked anything that I can remember. I took an interest in it early and did any baking that was done in the house. My sister and I took over all the cooking too when she started working when I was 12.


I know where there is one. It was planted as a decorative tree, so no picks it. I go every fall and glean all the crabapples for jelly. It makes a beautiful jelly. I also have a few old homestead abandoned trees that are now on the sides of roads, mostly plums. They are on my regular fruit picking rounds and I guard their locations

you can try spraying it with floral ( like what they spray xmas trees with to keep them fresh)
holds the mouisture. It is not that they are cold to 20 degrees it is the constant cold we get in the winter that the valley does not. I have seen them in protected areas around Sacramento but they do not fruit well or usually thrive there.
 
I haven't been posting photos of the pups like I was supposed to and then suddenly it was time for 2 to go to their new homes today. Goodbye sweet puppies!







 
I've always loved what I call the "old lady sports" at the Fair, baking, canning, tatting, etc.  I think I've finally convinced my son to let me teach him to can (I didn't have a daughter).  :rolleyes:   Although he does enjoy baking.

I would love to learn jelly and jam again. ;) I use to do it when I was a young girl with my Grandmother. It has been so long i cant really remember all the steps. ;(
She was the 4H leader. ;) we would make blackberry jelly ever year. Very good memories....

We are getting ready to do olives....Yummy!
 
Look at what I found under the hanging feeder today:



The very tiny egg in the center. I do have three Heritage RIRs that are in the 20 week range but they do not seem ready to lay eggs yet. I do have a bunch of Molting Hens so this could be an egg from starting a new laying cycle. I cant wait to see if it is all yolk or not.
