Howdy folks,

I joined this page cause I live in SE Cal right below Death Valley so you know it is hot here now triple digit weather for three months/year. I bought four ISA/red star pullets, they are about six weeks old now, ordered from Pet Chickens because I decided what I wanted pretty late in the season.

Started raising chickens more that a decade ago. Ordered a staight run of chicks from McMurrary. Received 20 roos and 6 hens. agood variety of breeds but I learned how to field dress the roos. darn it still is a lot of work even after the skin is removed.

My first post and as soon as I learn how to up-load pics I will cause my girls are beautiful even if their feathers are not fully developed. They don't mind the heat and already know how to enter and exit the crate whcih is four feet high.

Great to hear from all the local SoCal people!!! I live in La Jolla and own 8 chickens and I just LOVE having them

I don't know any backyard chicken groups around my area but if anyone starts one up I'll definitely join......they have a local garden club but I haven't joined them yet....I started a huge veggie/fruit garden and wanted to join that group....who knows maybe someone there has some chickens too!!

Wow! all these chicken people so close! Do either of you "Frankensusan or Coppa" have illegal chickens- or are you zoned for them? I am in a subdivision that doesn't allow them- although they are allowed outside the subdivision in certain neighborhoods. It will be interesting when they get to their crazy egg-laying "loud" stage- but right now they are quiet. My next door neighbor (closest to them) is on board and waiting for eggs so no problem there.

Coppa- I love all things animal too, am also an avid baker- just hobby though- not professionally trained. My daughter-in-law however graduated from the CIA in pastry - used to work for 4 seasons and now does custom specialty cakes for people.

I have 6 chickens: 1 SLW, 1 GLW, and 4 EE's. I have a standard poodle who loves them- I love that you have great danes- one of my favorite breeds You must have a large piece of property to house all those animals and large garden? I put in a mini-garden this year all in pots (small lot) I long one day to have a space large enough for many more animals and a beautiful potagers garden

O.C. Chickens- I grew up there- with chickens,cows, geese, phesant, fish, dogs, snakes, etc etc etc... I barely recognise the OC of today from the O.C of yesteryear

chick4chix - That is fantastic that you love to bake too and your daughter in law too!! I couldn't live without being able to cook....is such a great fun way to get friends and family together

I used to work at a bakery in NYC right after I finished school but I haven't worked for the past 4 years since I moved to California and got married.

To be honest I am not sure if I am allowed to have chickens in La Jolla. I even asked on another thread but no replies yet. I've had them for the past year and I'm fortunate enough to have fantastic neighbors and they adore my chickens and since I live in a very quiet and private area, I doubt anyone else knows I have them besides my next door neighbor. Also I really don't know anyone else that has chickens around where I live so I don't know what the laws are around here. I would suppose we can have them just because a very old couple that lives about 10 houses up the road from me used to have a miniature pony for his grand kids with a mini barn and everything but he told me that was years and years ago and he no longer has him.....and to think someone can have a pony dead in the center of La Jolla makes me think chickens wouldn't be a problem lol

We live on about 3/4 acres with a huge yard in front and in the back so yes we have a lot of space for all our animals and my danes love it!!! Although they are huge couch potatoes and hardly do anything else then relax in the sun lol We also just cleared a large area that was full of brushes so I can move my fruit trees and garden over there and the chicken are having a blast going through the leftover bushes and looking for bugs

But I have to be honest I'm not so sure I am looking forward to my new garden.....I only have experience with herbs and the few veggies I grow are in a small area right now and from the books I've been reading is quite a workout taking care of a large garden. Maybe I'll just fill it with permanent fruit trees and herbs and keep some simpler vegetables that I know we eat often.

Here's a picture of the area we just cleared this weekend.....is that pie shape area behind the pool....you can only imagine that it'll probably take us a year or more to ever get that place terraced and have veggies/fruits planted in there LOL

I hope we see more people from San Diego posting here.....it would be great knowing that there's more people like us that love animals, mainly our chickens!!!

Wow Coppa - your garden area is gorgeous! I'll bet the chickens are allowed since it seems more rural with the size and as you said your neighbor had a pony.
My daughter in law also is from NY-(she grew up on Long Island) that was the CIA she attended. Then she moved here when the FourSeasons Aviara opened-then met my son and the rest is history- ha. I should get you guys together- she just put in her first garden too- raised planter beds. Her kids (my grandkids) are 5 and 3- do you have kids?
Have you been to Claires on Cedros? It just opened a few weeks ago in Solana Beach-a totally green building with locally harvested humanely raised, organic food on the menu. I sent my daughter-in-law there yesterday - I thought she could bake for them

I just baked an apple pie- it's cooling on the counter. Today is my DH birthday and he and my two sons have always wanted pie for their birthday not cake LOL! Although they have branched out some and now like cheesecake or tirimisu or something - but not a traditional cake- what is your specialty?
