Call duck egg day 20 (set August 21)

So I think I’ve decided to lockdown when I see a drawdown if it’s before day 23. If not I will just put it into lockdown on day 23. I think I will aim to have the humidity between 65 and 70. I will put a safety hole in the egg 16 hours after it internally pips, so it doesn’t suffocate. It’s alright to open the incubator during lockdown to quickly check if it’s internally pipped right? I’m very nervous because this is the only Call egg I have left in the incubator. I originally started with 9 eggs but only 2 started developing and one quit on day 9. If this little guy hatches it’ll be a single duckling. This one has a smaller air cell so I’m also worried about that. Is there anything I can do about the air cell at this point? I don’t think there is, I had tried lowering the humidity but couldn’t very much because I had a guinea egg in lockdown. Does this sound good for lockdown? :fl

Why do some birds' eggs need safety holes? Do hens poke holes in them? Are they not able to hatch without human intervention?
When did this start?

Call's (Especially show quality -type) have very short bills and necks, and therefore have a very hard time externally pipping in the shell. Left alone they often suffocate and die. I've noted as having 75% of calls eggs die if they weren't assisted.

I guess that in their development, hatchability wasn't taken into consideration. Interesting.

It is day 22. It would be alright to quit turning today right? I’m not going to up the humidity until tommorow. No internal pips or drawdowns as of now. :fl

Day 23! All is well, although no signs of shadowing, drawdown, or internal pip yet. I have not witnessed the egg rocking either as of now. I am upping the humidity to 65 today and removing the automatic Turner. (It is already unplugged, I just have to take it out. The little baby was moving around when i did a quick morning candle. Hope all goes well. I'm getting nervous as the days grow closer. I read over Pyxis's guide again and practiced making safety holes, since it has been a while since I've had to assist one. I also broke out my emergency hatching kit... containg all the basics such as coconut oil, a drill bit and screw, tweezers, and q tips. I think I am physically prepared but mentally is questionable... :barnie :lau:th:eek:

Good luck. You got this!! :fl

The only thing I’m worried about is if this little duckling hatches it’ll be a single duckling. I’m thinking I’ll give it a mirror and stuffed animal maybe... I’ve also never had a single duckling. I will not be able to aquire another ducking and I’m not home most of the day because I work. I do have friends and family that live very close so they said they’d be able to babysit during the day if it hatches. I would just be worried about it being lonely because all my past ducklings have hatched with siblings.

I did remove the turner tonight and the humidity is steady at 65. Still no shadowing, internal pip, or drawdown as of now. End of day 23. Candled quick when I removed the turner. Moving around and lively. I wish I could stay home from work tommorow to watch incubator tv...:pop :fl
