Call Ducks Finally Hatched

It's just heartbreaking to see it. I have a friend who ordered chicks from a hatchery last month. Shipping was delayed and it was 5 days before they arrived. Only 7 out of the 25 made it. They sent a replacement order a week later and not 1 of the 25 survived. A couple of months wouldn't have made that much of a difference other then the fact that those babies would probably still be living. She finally decided to wait on the next replacement shipment until late next month. I still think that's a little too early but hopefully they'll be ok. Not to say that something cant happen even in warmer weather because it does. They just have a better chance of survival when they're not freezing. You just can't predict everything and just never know what might happen with usps. When you get your little ones safe and sound it will make it worth all the wait.

That's awful and yeh she should wait. Our cold weather won't break until April.

How are these babies fed when they are being shipped all over the place?

Newborns don't need food for the first few days as they finish the nutrition left in their yolk sack. After that they can be given gro-gel in the box. It's a jelly type substance that give nutrients and hydration. As adults they can be given the same or can go without if fed right before shipping and as soon as they reach their destination (depending on how long they'll be in transit)

oh good, I had absolutely no idea. Thank you for the great explanation.

There's a Gel that you can get and place it in the box for water, it can be put inside a little container or cup that you tie to the box. The box usually has a net like liner or pouches that you can place
apples, oranges, shredded carrots, even shredded lettuce. Regular feed isn't recommended so you have to substitute.

Still growing. Today was lockdown. 16 out of 20 eggs look to be doing fine and should hatch. I think I am just going to put a breathing hole on day 27 of incubation for our little sideways duck just in case. What do you think?
