Call Ducks Finally Hatched

If you want to keep your calls pure, don't. That's a surefire way to get a whole buncha different genes all mixed up and you won't really have calls anymore, let alone be able to predict their color patterns.

Yeah for sure! I am going to keep wood ducks with my call ducks but they dont breed as long as the wood ducks have mates.

NO! Dont clean eggs if you plan to hatch them! You can scrub the poo off if there is any just dont wash.

Thanks so much. Thankfully I haven't. What would you scrub them with? As of right now all I've done is gently, and I mean gently, wiped them off with a paper towel. So, they are still a little bit dirty. Not much. A little bit though.

You can use like a dish scrubber, As long as it does not have soap on it. A DRY paper towel should work. Just try to get the poop off if there is any at all. Dont try to scrape of anything else.

I wouldn't even do that much, honestly. A scrubber brush could scratch the egg and force bacteria down into the pinholes. A moist paper towel gentle wips is fine, but NOT a scrubber brush! I've hatched eggs that had a tiny bit of dried up poop on 'em. It's better than the alternative.

Oh sorry I meant one of those scrubbers that look like the ones that they make to scrub your boots off when you walk in the door.

That sounds even worse, as those have tougher bristles.

Somebody explain to me the difference between magpie, bibbed, ancona, penciled, and pied. Whew. Lol, please and thank you.

The difference is the pattern. Most can come in many colors though.
This would be a magpie (blue). Like a magpie duck, they are supposed to have a colored cap, back, and tail. Some can be "mismarked" magpies which simply means they have irregular spots or color in incorrect places. Some people call the mismarked ones "anconas or harlequins" but I use those terms as different patterns as shown below.


Bibbed is a body that is one color with a "bib" of white on the chest. This is a silver bibbed call.






These would be examples of "ancona" (the one tammy posted is actually one of mine!). Notice how these are primarily white birds with random spotting or speckles?


The two more heavily marked brownish birds in this pic are "penciled". These are blue penciled which is basically a blue version of regular penciled. They are generally more pied rather than magpie as they have solid colored chests and more solid colored heads.




These would be considered "pied". Notice how they are too heavily marked to be ancona or magpie, but have too much white to be bibbed?
