calling all wild bird feeders!!

I love to see all of the wild birds that come to the feeders. Just started seeing robins moving through. We have a huge number of resident species here. I was also hearing drumming woodpeckers probably the Pilated but we have downy red headed and caucaded Cardinals jays chickadees goldfinch wrens titmouse cedar waxwing vulture Hawks vireo and rufous hummingbirds that are year round

Snow/freezing rain here today. Had to clean the ice off of and fill the feeders this AM. While I was working on the 'West' feeder a Junco arrived and started feeding right at my feet - neat!

That is neat, I do not have any that friendly.

It is below zero and windy so I have real empty feeders today.

I keep one feeder filled through mid summer for any nesting birds - generally stop feeding Sept. or so. Somewhere around first frost I can count on the Chickadees 'telling' me that it is time to fill the feeders. There is one feeder (East feeder) by my parking lot, and when I exit the truck they will fly towards me going dee dee dee, and then fly back to the feeder as if to say, "OK, Boss, fill it up. The Chickadees are generally my tamest birds. Generally the Juncos are not that tame - must have been a hungry bird this morning. The Red Tail was checking for squirrels again today - not a squirrel in sight.

I feed year round.

I have the worlds dumbest hairy woodpecker on my feeder right now. I heard a terrible racket, looked out and saw the woodpecker pounding on the board I have suet hanging from. He is too dumb to move the 2 inches to the right to hit the suet!.

It is a board screwed to a 4 inch PVC pipe,, so it really amplifies the pounding. The suet hangs on the top edge of the board. ( it helps the pileated woodpeckers with the board to grab onto.)

I have seven feeders each with a different type of feed the messy ones like the finches toss stuff out and the dove clean up on the ground. We also have a lot of berries that keep birds around we did have a monthlong spell in September when they all disappeared. I had read that even the residents will move neighborhoods for a bit to add genetic diversity I suppose

Beat ya!
I have 9 hanging from my array right now. Of course one is my Oreille jelly which is just taking up space this time of year.. Come spring I will add 2 hummingbird feeders to it.

My wife hates my feeder. I had to make it somewhat bear and squirrel proof, so it is more practical than beautiful. I really do not care as I love my birds, they sooth me.

I am so disappointed this winter in the number of birds I have gotten. I am worried something got my wild birds or disease went rampart in them. Hopefully, more will come soon. Maybe it is just the result of a mild winter and the readily available wild feed.

Or they are out looking for cultural diversity....

I could use a little 'squirrel proof'. I only have 3 feeders and they are presently being enjoyed by 9 squirrels. Back in the day, I would be preparing for some fried squirrel.

I used 4 inch PVC pipe and put two uprights and a cross member and hang my feeders off that. I is about 10 ft tall and I hang my feeders 6-7 feet off the ground. The ground falls away rapidly from our window so that is window height for us.

The squirrels cannot climb a 4 inch PVC. BUT the dang things crawl up my bird bath and jump to the feeder.

I have ended up ( I shudder to say this because people will hate me) having to shoot squirrels and feed them to the chickens. Once I started feeding chickens and birds the squirrel population has exploded. I have hundreds of them here. I have shot 3, I feel bad doing it, BUT I know I really should kill more as we are getting over run and that just invites disease and rabies.

I will see 8-10 in my chicken feeders every day!

I know people from town trap them and drive out this way to "let them go in the wild". I am tempted to live trap them and drive them into town and let them gain some culture.
