Calling on Older & Wiser BYCer's

Okay - gotta show my bator ignorance. Two of you have mentioned replacing the wafer - don't know what that is.

But boy, if you could only see the smile on our faces. We couldn't find the info anywhere! Y'all are a great help!

Y'all are amazing. What a wealth of info. I'm gonna try to get that catalog on windows so I can enlarge it.

the wafer is a round 3" damiter disk that controls the temp, it usualy is brass colored with a silver edge and there is a screw or something like a screw on one side of it that turns up and down.

Wow! 18.50! I guess that was a lot back then. Attached to the top of the incubator is the chamber holding the heating element, and the thermostat, which works using a wafer, that looks kind of like a brass or aluminum cookie. It is easily changed, many saying to change it yearly, others say just change it out when you have to. They cost about $7.

.

so you can order these wafers anywhere? Just go to the feed store?

Here's a pic of the handles I put on. I did that after crushing a couple of eggs because there is absolutely nothing to get ahold of to lift the top.

And here's a pic of the heating element cover, and the thermostat unit, its covered, but easy to get to. Then I installed 2 little dc fans each one blows in the opposite direction, sort of circling the air in the unit. I tested with multiple thermometers in different areas, and it works pretty well.

I have not seen one of those since the early 50's.
I can remember, when my grand father got his. He cursed it worse than most curse the LGs today. Then he learned how to use it. After that it could do no wrong. If you can get it fired up, you will enjoy it. It is just like a good broody hen, once she starts she never quits.

Looks like we've got some fiddling to do, but it just might work! Thanks Jen. Like I said earlier, if you don't mind, I may have to PM you sometime in the next week or two.

That's all I need, another excuse to hatch again.

It's already starting to get outta hand, and I don't even realize it until it's too late. All we wanted was a few chickens to feed our family of four. We have 12 chickens, 22 chicks (3 wks old), and 28 in the bator. Ya think that's enough to keep us in eggs? But in all honesty, we won't know if the bator works unless we try it, right? And how many eggs will that thing hold? arggggghhhhhh
