Can’t get rid of lice infestation on chickens

Here's a pic of the plastic container I use. It also comes in handy soaking a hen when she's eggbound.

Thank
This is permethrin dust:

I also use Sevin dust. I tend to rotate every other year, so I don't get resistant bugs. Whichever I use to dust them with, is what I use to do the follow up, as long as it's working.

thank you! I will look for the high yield. Sevin didn’t work for me.

If the Sevin did not work, try the permethrin one. I really do like it.

I've had a few people I know, recommend spinosad dust. They claim it works good, and is suppose to be safer. I've not personally used it, but I do trust at least 1 person that recommended it. It's fairly expensive though, so if you're not totally organic, I would try the permethrin first.

Thanks, I will try the permethrin. We try to do as much as we can organic but when it comes to something like this where we could lose them I will use the chemicals! Thanks!

We have been trying to treat a lice infestation for quite some time. We have been treating with Sevin dust on the chickens and then again in 10 days. We also took everything out of the coop sprayed the coop with Gordon’s spray but we did not repeat the spray in thecoop 10 days later, were we supposed to? Also we put on the chickens when dusting the ivermectin pour on for cattle and followed dosing directions we found on here. We repeated in 10 days. We still didn’t get rid of them so we did the same process again.

I just read we can spray Gordon’s on the chickens and I didn’t know that. Also said to use oil as it sticks better on tractor supplies q and a section on it. What oil do you use?

I also just saw round worms on the dropping board. I have some safeguard paste I was going to use for that.

Can anyone help me out here as to my steps and best to use as I thought I was doing it right. I have about 40 chickens.

Thank you!
Also we had sand for our litter in the coop and when we got the lice it was a lot of work to remove and haul sand in and so we went with shavings as it’s easier to clean out. Our coop is up on a deck and hard to do the sand. Any opinions on what is better for keeping the lice/mites away. We have a lot of sand in the horse stalls so the chickens have access outside the coop to plenty of sand, dirt etc for dust bathing.

Not long ago I had an infestation of mites, for the first time. We have had a lot of rain, way above average, and it has been hot here which I think contributed to it. I have been spraying Permethrin weekly in all of the coops (walls, floors any cracks and crevices, nest boxes) partly as a preventative to keep the mites from spreading. The girls were starting to look a little ragged so upon inspection of them discovered the mites. They are looking better but I know it will be awhile before they look great again. I do have shaving in the coops that have floors in them. I cleaned all of the coops first before I started spraying them.

I'm so sorry to hear you are dealing with this... sounds frustrating!:(
I haven't heard of this before... I am very new to chickens, but I'm not surprised it can happen...!
Does anyone know if lice or coop mites are very common? Does it pertain to a certain area of the country, certain climates, or a specific season? And can I prevent them by doing anything special?
I appreciate any advice! :bow

Right cmom, we've getting deluge rains practically every day for the last 2 months. I had a minor lice issue last week that I took care of. With everything wet, it aggravates the situation. Parasites love wet weather.

very common
well if you quarantine any new birds and can keep wild birds out..they bring the lice/mites in... I keep sulfur in the dust baths and haven't had any problems since https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1365-2915.2011.00997.x
