Can i mix chicks of different ages

Thanks for all of the help guys! I can see you have alot of chicken experiance how many do you have!
I have 50 ish chickens (down to 4 roosters) with only about 6 years experience... none of it includes illness and I lost my first chick to a predator recently. I still have much learning to do though, it never ends!

What do you mean when you say "chicken BREEDING sanctuary"? Any place that is still allowing the animals to reproduce is not in my opinion any type of rescue or sanctuary unless it's trying to preserve a specific species. Not knocking it as I don't know the whole story. Just saying somethings aren't as sweet as they sound on the surface. So there may be more questions you wanna ask before sending anyone that way.

Also, even if you can't do... no shame in letting extra boys feed someone else's family who will do it humanely.

Not too scare you... my last hatch had 7 out of 9 boys.... and then 1 of the only 2 girls was taken by a predator.

That being said, I did get 3 SR Silkies last year that ALL ended up being girls!

Some chick breeds can be sexed by feather length at a specific age but not past that. And I don't know which breeds, but definitely not all.

I didnt really hear any but im part deaf whoops!

My friend recently told me it isnt 100% but you can sex chicks by holding them. On there back and seeing if they try to fly awy or not

Is this true i have been trying this and some chicks will fight so hard not to let me even flip them over and others will jut sit there dazed and then get up if tjey want to

The ones that fight usualy stay down when there done fighting

Totally false!

Chicks on their backs are very vulnerable and it isn't a natural position for them. Most should fight to get upright. If they don't they are either to sick/tired to fight. Or just not scared or have the self preservation instinct... A chick on its back in the brooder is a soon to be trampled and dead chick!

How old are your chicks? There are a few ways some can be sexed and others not. But that one is NOT.

And by not 100%.... you have a 50/50 chance of getting it right, so I guess there is that!

I quickly realized this method didnt work

I ended up getting six silkies a. Week old. Because when i originaly stsrted this thread i was ordering 4 1 day old. Chicks

Whenni got to the post office they had all. Kicked the bucket

The silkies are doing lively with the others and they like to. Spend. Time. Outside

But I love Silkies! If you can keep them from going broody all the time. I have enough other hens that give up eggs though. Silkies are usually straight run. I actually got 3 females and no males. Now today our local breeder is supposed to have maybe 10 available... hope to get a couple more of different colors as ours are all black. Not a good pic... but it's my broody silkie with her 4 adopted boy chicks. (lucky guess when I picked out which ones were going to the broody).
