1 x3 is fine for what you are doing I used it on one of my runs. I wish I could get more of it that size. 1 x 2 is also OK. I used 2 x 4 welded wire on my run and then put chicken wire around the inside.
Um... You could use the 1x3 and at the bottom get some chicken wire or hardware cloth to give an extra barrier. 3' up is enough to keep them safe I'm sure. What are your predators?
thank you...but the 1x1 mesh only comes in 50 in i believe and my A-frame run from top to bottom is 58 in. But i could get 1in x 2in like you did and run it from top to bottom....then just run hardwear cloth around the last few feet around the bottom. The 1in x 2in welded wire on most of the top should still keep dog's and hawks out...then the hardwear wrapped around the last few feet over the welded wire should keep my girl's from pokeing their heads out so the racoon's wont grab them. Am i on the right track???
I'd say you're on the right track. 1"x2" top to bottom and then just run the 1/2" mesh around the bottom so the coons can't reach in and the birds can't put their necks out. Bury some wire and bend it in as well, so coons can't dig under it. If you can get the 4' HW cloth, it leaves you a foot or so to bury and still have it 3' high.
We sunk landscaping timber with the wire secured to that and bent it in.

yea the places i have checked allready had told me what they got is what they can order so no help there. I guess it's up to lowes and Home depot to save me....but you saying they only have 48 in scares me!
Now i thought about using hardwearcloth/welded wire from top to bottom on my run. But then takeing chicken wire and running it along the bottom part of the run "about a foot high" over-laping the welded wire. Or i could just use hardwear cloth again...but then continue the extra layer about another foot off the run into the ground...burying it. Do i have the right idea??
Yes you do have the right idea. If cost isn't an issue wrap the whole run in hardware cloth. It's very durable. I buried about 2 feet on the ground covered it with dirt and worked my way up from there. I have horizontal 2x4 so I could attach the hardware cloth every 4 feet or so. I did however put 2 layers of poultry netting on the top for 2 reasons. The first was cost...... the second was leaves and pine needles collected on the top of the run. They fell thru the poultry netting better than they would have the hardware cloth.
As far as the apron buried and bent, is it better to bend it outward or in? I was thinking a predator would only dig right at the bottom of the vertical fence, so bending it out would prevent it from getting in. Thoughts?
I may just be missing the point, but I dont think your going to find much of anything in 60" height. Wouldnt it be much easier just to divide your 58" in half and that way you can attach a top and bottom section and it would add stability to your coop. Once you've got the frame up its not that difficult to add a board in the middle to staple too.
