DANG IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everyone has told me on here chicken wire is NOT good enough to proctect my chickens from pred's. I was told to get hardwear cloth and or welded wire. I cant seem to find the right sizes anywhere. The welded wire needs to be no bigger than 1in x1in in the mesh size and it needs to be 60 in tall and i need about 50 to 60 feet. Same with the hardwear cloth...cant find the right ammont of feet and or inches high. Can you guys help me out?? My girls are starting to ger cramped!!!

personally - I purchased 100 feet of 3' high 1/2 inch hardware cloth.
I am using that for my run. I have planed a board in the middle height to allow me to attach at that point.

hope this helps

You've tried your local feedstores, asked if they can order you some?

You may have to compromise on height and/or length. (If you end up with more than you need, save it for future projects, or try selling it at-cost thru the classifieds if it is an unusual width).

Or piece it together. For instance a 5' fence could be made with 3' high stuff topped with 2' high, with the seam securely "sewn" together with galvanized fence wire of a decent gauge or backed up with a horizontal 2x2 or 2x4 that both pieces along the seam are stapled or screwed into.

Or, you could consider 2x4" mesh (easier to find in 5' height) and then just run hardwarecloth (or, in my opinion, even 1/2" chickenwire if you can find it) inside the bottom 2-3' to prevent reach-through.

Good luck,

Pat

Both Home Depot and Lowes in our area carry a 5' welded wire in various lengths - 25 feet and up, and a 1/2 inch 4 foot high hardware cloth. We used the welded wire for the fence, but then "aproned" the welded wire along the bottom, bent in half, about 2 1/2 feet high, and 1 1/2 feet out horizontally, beneath 2 inches of dirt and stone. This is pricey, but pretty secure against digging. My neighbor has her chickens in just a standard poultry wire run, and has for years, with few problems.

yea the places i have checked allready had told me what they got is what they can order so no help there. I guess it's up to lowes and Home depot to save me....but you saying they only have 48 in scares me!

Now i thought about using hardwearcloth/welded wire from top to bottom on my run. But then takeing chicken wire and running it along the bottom part of the run "about a foot high" over-laping the welded wire. Or i could just use hardwear cloth again...but then continue the extra layer about another foot off the run into the ground...burying it. Do i have the right idea??

If you have Home Depot in your area, they carry several sizes of rolls of 1/2" hardware cloth. I got mine there.

The rolls of hardware cloth I got were 4'x50' rolls of 1/2" welded galvanized mesh, though I don't recall the manufacturer, might have been keystone.

Also, if you have an independant hardware store in your area, they may be able to order from Keystone / RedBrand or get Keystone via TrueValu for you. If you have an Ace or a Mills Fleet and Farm store, see if they can order it for you.

Here's 1/2", but I could only find a 36" roll on the web ... I got 48"x50' at Home Depot ...

Here's the Keystone welded 1" mesh agricultural fence if that's what you're after:

Here's the Redbrand dealer locater:

If you're building a walk-in run, it might be cheaper for you to use 1"x1" or 1"x2" on a 6' roll, and then just put 36" of hardware cloth around the bottom inside the main fencing to keep racoons from reaching through or your birds from putting their heads out.

We roofed ours with 1/2" HW cloth too, though the 1" sq I listed above might have been a better way to go.

thank you...but the 1x1 mesh only comes in 50 in i believe and my A-frame run from top to bottom is 58 in. But i could get 1in x 2in like you did and run it from top to bottom....then just run hardwear cloth around the last few feet around the bottom. The 1in x 2in welded wire on most of the top should still keep dog's and hawks out...then the hardwear wrapped around the last few feet over the welded wire should keep my girl's from pokeing their heads out so the racoon's wont grab them. Am i on the right track???

I bought 4' high x 25' x 1/2" hardware cloth at Home Depot and 3' x 25' @ Lowes. I put the 4' on the bottom of my run and buried it about 9" or so and then ran another horizontal stud and put the 3' on top of that. You can kind of see it in one of the pics I have on my BYC page. Still working on putting it on the top of the run so it's as predator proof as I can make it.
