You could go with hair sheep if you want the qualities of sheep without the shearing. There are at least three breeds that I know of that shed their wool. Dorper, Barbados Blackbelly, and Katahdin.but a lot of people have been steering me towards sheep... So, I don't know anymore, lol! I'm just not crazy about having to shear them every so often. Pain in the b***.
I have wool sheep and shear them myself. I’ve also been learning to process the wool into yarn. I’m super slow at it, but was surprised to find that I enjoy the process.

I do have to agree with your friends and recommend sheep over goats. I had goats and they were way higher maintenance than my sheep. Even with having to shear them, they really take less time for management than goats do. I’m also more comfortable figuring out how to safely work with a ram than I am keeping my windows closed and my nose plugged from the stench of a buck, so there is that too
