Drowning is a lousy way to get rid of ANYTHING, and I believe it will get you arrested for animal cruelty if somebody happens to be watching you. If you absolutely must kill something, at least do it humanely.

The best way to prevent predation of your flock is to build a safe enclosure for them.

I am not saying anything about it living or not living. BUT, I can bet it will be back. Next time nring it way, way, way out there. Or bring it to animal control and tell them to "relocate" it for you. Also, even though you don't think it will be someone elses problem, you never know. It might find ists way to someone's garbage can.

My mother has chickens. She also has a raccoon who started coming around about 2 years ago as a baby, with her mother. She has been a regular fixture for the past couple of years and a week or so ago, brought her 2 new babies to meet my mom. The chicken run is as predator proof as my mom can make it, the coop is impossible for a predator to penetrate, she keeps lots of food for the mommy coon, and all are happy. She pigs out, climbs up on the porch rail, and takes a nap. Yeah, she would eat the chickens if she could....she is a wild animal. However, you can obviously find ways to live in harmony with nature.

Oops, also meant to say, glad you were finally able to catch her (unbelievable without bait!!!) and move her on. She is a beauty.

Second of all, drowning anything is horrible. Why would I want to make a poor animal suffer, and I dont even know that the raccoon is the one that killed by barred rock hen. I couldn't live with myself if killed an animal, just to kill it.

Last year, I had no raccoons, just hawks. This year I have raccoons and no hawks.


I also have a weasel, that killed 3 of my baby chicks, and bit the mother hens head up. I will be euthanizing that, if I catch it.

Anybody have any hints on how to catch a weasel?

I think what I said was very nice. If you don't that is your problem. We seem to have differing opinions on how to deal with a catch but don't tell what to say and what not. Also you are contradicting yourself because you say you plan to kill the weasel. Play nice now.

I just want to say I don't know how big your trap is...but based on the coons I've seen here in Tx...that wasn't a 'big un'

I've seen nutra rats bigger than that! A friend in HS, his grandparents had a pet coon who gosh, I wanna say they said it weighed over 60 lbs...I know it scared the b'jeses outta me. It had it's own recliner and was bigger than a pot belly pig.
Ok, I'm ramblin.
As far as the weasel, there is a good article in the european poultry magazine that should help you.

A coon will travel that 2 miles overnight. I bet he will be back unless he finds a better source of food between where you dropped him off and your chicken coop.

I typically shoot them in the head with a 22 rifle. But if you have no gun or just can't bring yourself to dispatch an animal in such a way, you can put it to sleep with either or starting fluid. A guy I work with told me how to do this. He is a animal lover and never killed anything until squirrels chewed their way into his basement and made a nest out of his insulation. He set a trap and caught 1. He put the trap with the squirrel in it inside a rubbermaid trash can. He then put the lid on it. He took a can of starting fluid and sprayed about 1/2 the bottle inside the can with the lid just cracked. He then shut the lid. No more squirrel. He seams to think it is the must humane way to dispatch animals. It gives him peace of mind. He has dispatched different anmals this way and he thinks it is the best and most humane way possible.

It is totally up to you with what you do with the predators you catch. If you feel good by taking them far away and letting them go, it is great. If you decide to dispatch the animal and can live with yourself afterwards, more power to you. It is all up to you.
