Charleston we have a Broody here!

Well it’s expected to be a small amount of neck feathers missing since the drakes have to hold on there when mating it’s when it gets down to skin and open that’s the problem. So hopefully that won’t happen. They are a gang of 7 now and have each other. I hope you have more girls than boys.

Hi friends,

it looks like my one year old Indian Runner Lady "Katharina" is broody: I noticed last Sunday that she spent almost the entire day inside the duck house and on Monday morning she was sitting on two eggs which she viciously and loudly defended. Since then she spends most of her time sitting like that:

Only one problem: Monday there were two eggs in that nest, today there are nine!

As i don't know which were the eggs from Monday and which of the additional eggs have been laid by Katharina and which were laid by other ducks, i snuck in to the house while Katy took a quick bath and drew a blue "X" on the shell of all nine eggs.

This way i will be able to identify any new eggs and can remove those.
As i have neither had a broody duck before nor have i ever hatched my own ducks eggs i have a lot of questions:
  • What is the usual size of a duck's clutch? Nine eggs looks like a lot to me…
  • Isn't it a little late for broody ducks to hatch ducklings?
  • Should i candle the eggs? - I never candled any egg, but maybe a Momma duck knows which eggs are good and which are bad?
And there will be more questions for sure. Thank you all very much in advance for your help.[/QUOTE

Ducklings are growing feathers and they eat cat kibbles like the grown ups by WannaBeHillBilly posted Aug 31, 2019 at 10:33 PM

Compared to Limpy, Erpelchen clamps down on the girls necks like a vice. They all run away from him. Blanca and Earthquack, the largest White Layers are chasing him away from the little ones and run him over, quacking angrily.

Once the ducklings are old enough to care for themselves…

I WILL KILL KATHARINA DUCK AND EAT HER !!!

She drove me mad this evening: I was in town bought a new water-hose, new water bowl, new 3 gallon waterer and a 50lbs bag of cat-food…
And when i cam back home Katharina was out in the open with all her ducklings!!!
I shushed her inside, caught seven frantic ducklings who now believe that i am an axe murderer and set them back inside.
Went down to the garage to attach the new water hose, came back just in time to watch Kathy standing on the fence, holding it down and luring the ducklings back out!
Shushed her back in, caught four ducklings who now are convinced that i eat two duck eggs for breakfast every morning (which is true).
Prepared dinner for the ducklings and the ducks - again Katharina and five ducklings are outside, forced Katharina back inside, caught five ducklings who are no convinced that i eat life kittens for dinner (i don't!).
On and on went that game until she was out again with all seven kids! I had enough, caught her (and didn't eat her!) and threw her into the bedroom in the duck-house, then chased down all seven ducklings who now are convinced that i will turn into a black hole one day and swallow the whole planet. (I'm not planing that either!)

I blame the approaching thunderstorm for her attitude this evening, outside it looks like the inside of an industrial washer, it is literally raining cats and dogs here. - We barely made it inside before the light(ning) show began. But if she puts up this show every day now i guarantee for nothing… I'll grow claws and fangs…
