Harry horse & Charlie adventures! Horse chat & much more! Everyone welcome!

Hi Kim

Hope all is ok there Barbara? No interwebber again?
All good thanks. WWW working fine but no operator time here. My sister did her back in and I ended up going over there to help out with her horses because she was in agony. nearly 2 hr round trip since I hit rush hour and then my own animals to do and preparations for our second lesson. Ian loaned me his Range Rover which is actually older than my ancient Freelander but much more capable of towing his horsebox. Unfortunately it is an automatic and because I never drive it, I needed a crash course (not literally thankfully) before towing the horses. I know an automatic is supposed to be easier but when your left foot is so used to pushing down a pedal and your right hand moving the gear lever every time you come to a junction or roundabout, it is scary. Especially when that left foot hits the brake pedal. Thankfully I only did that 2 or 3 times at very slow speed but the horses will not have found it the smoothest ride. We had a good lesson but both horses were distracted by having a pal in the arena with them. Zak was too busy keeping an eye on Archie (yes I took two of Ian's horses for Lauren and I) to notice that a jump that was looming in front of him, consequently we had a few refusals and quite a bit of nappy behaviour. He was jumping in a nicer outline though and the instructor helped that by bringing the placing pole forward. He particularly liked the little spreads. Unfortunately we had a bit of an issue after she put the water jump fence up a bit... the last fence of the course with blue water trays beneath it. We jumped it twice when it was low but for some reason he changed his mind about taking off at the last moment on our third attempt, swung sideways and put his back feet into the trays, which gave him a fright and he didn't want to go anywhere near it after that. After several leads from Archie we got him over it and then he jumped it on his own and then we tried to do the course but he lost concentration at another jump and stopped. I eventually got him over it and we finished the course including the water tray fence but I felt like we were one step forward and possible two back. Cake was pear and almond tart and despite not being something I would choose, it was delicious.
Got home and got back on them and escorted Ian out to the two hunt jumps that he had wired up a few weeks back, to take the wire back down and make them accessible for today. It was probably about 6 miles and halfway round Zak suddenly grew and pulled his head in and bounced and became a power house. We rattled through the woods home to get back just before dark and he was like someone had turned on the turbo boost! Ian was saying how he has done that only a couple of other times and wished he would do it in the show ring! Anyway, I'm not sure if that counts for one or two

for yesterday, since it was the same horse but two distinct rides?

No, I haven't hunted with Ian, but Jules, the farmer's partner, where Ian keeps his horses says he really looks after her whilst they are out hunting.... which is a bit of a surprise because they don't actually get on that well. Maybe one day I will go out but I still don't feel that my jumping is confident enough and by body fit enough and it is an expensive day to not take full advantage and just go home after a couple of hours.... and then I would have to get some new kit, because I am too fat for what I have!

I hope you manage to find time to get out on Harry this weekend. There has been a sad deficit of flag waving from your end in recent weeks! I know Harry will not mind but it is supposed to be what all the hard work is for and that clip should see the light of day before it needs redoing..... I'm one to talk of course..... Rascal's shoes have not seen tarmac since they were put on a month ago!

@rebrascora

Hi Barbara! No operating time, I get it! How’s your sister doing? Any better with her back or are you still helping out?
Such a shame the horses were distracted during your lesson. But all good experience I guess? Have you got another one booked? I would certainly say 2 flags for the other day even though it was the same horse! Zak on turbo boost sure has made me chuckle! Maybe Ian needs to take him for a jump lesson before showing so he’s on that boost in the ring!

The driving an automatic sounds interesting! You need to hold that left leg so it’s not got the urge to touch a peddle! I was the same when Scott had an auto Navara. Never driven one in my life and that left leg was terrible at moving about! Don’t you think they make for lazy driving?

If you get to go hunting can you not avoid the big jumps? I’m afraid the handful of times I’ve been I’ve always had a nanny & been in the newbie group so we could avoid the big jumps. You are right though about it costing a bomb. I’ve paid twice and been paid 3 times to go. When I got paid they must have been desperate for a rider because they needed the day’s hunting so they could qualify for their point to point. All the times I’ve had to borrow a jacket though! If you ever do get new check out the equestrian section on sports direct. Jackets & showing/3in1 shirts are always on offer there. I also much preferred the during the week hunt days rather than the Boxing Day or New Years day’s ones that were just way too busy for me. Even on a steady, coloured hairy gypsy cob the xmas & new year ones were overwhelming!

Yes I’m bad and not ridden again. Still going round like a blue bottomed fly here. I’m way behind on my Christmas preparations too. Trying to play catch up but not getting anywhere fast! Plus yesterday he scared me to death as he was totally spark out in the field when I went to get him in! Seriously he looked liked he croaked it! Got up in the end after a couple of goes but was looking very stiff. Came in and ate the haylage ok though. I had to get right up to him before he even made and effort to get up! My heart was pounding!

Well I suppose I best get dressed and get started for the day. Catch you soon Barbara xx

At long last I’m getting a flag out for this afternoon!

Not raining and not too windy so I bit the bullet. Only had half hour in the school but it’s better than nothing. I did nearly come a cropper and thought I was going to hit the deck! Got on him fine and had a nice 20 minutes steady away until he decided he was going to set off when he wanted to follow 2 horses coming in from the field as they went past. After setting off he decided that was the wrong direction so slammed the anchors on and turned sharply to the left but momentum was still carrying me forward so I nearly came out the side door  He was in a right mood then as I made him do another 10 minutes in the school whilst he was in a strop! He really didn’t feel 22 this afternoon!

And there was me thinking he was always such a good boy! Well done you for flying a flag and more so for staying on and making him do a little extra. Hpe you managed to end on a positive note.
I can tell you, I get bronking and side diving and sometimes rearing in the first few minutes if they haven't been ridden for a few weeks.... unfortunately I am at that stage now and don't have the safety of an arena to work in, just a busy main road.... hence I'm in coward mode and daren't invite Lauren to ride with me until I know I have taken the edge off at least one of them for her.
No I haven't booked a lesson for this week. My back has been twinging too as I have been doing heavy work shifting manure and my sis is still out of action although thankfully pals at her yard are helping out with her GGs. The doc seems to think it may be a virus and that seems logical with the pain being in both her lower back and chest and now her wrist. In some respects it is comforting to think that at least she hasn't injured herself or that it is some structural break down like arthritis but other than keep taking the painkillers, she will just have to wait until it is passed.
Must go deliver some more manure before the light is gone , now that I have given my back a bit of a rest. It is very local so I am barrowing it. Ugg! Easier to fill, push and tip the barrow multiple times, than fill and empty the trailer and try to manoeuver it 100 yards along a busy main road and into their garden which is really difficult access and very tight to get turned.

He certainly isn’t always a good boy  Nothing ever too major but enough just to keep me on my toes. The setting off today caught me off guard as he literally went from walk to a leaping canter in a split second!

Moving manure sure is back breaking! Just make sure it’s not that virus developing that your sister has got. Hope she’s feeling better soon. Nice that friends at her place are helping with her GG’s. There really is so much going about at the moment virus & bug wise :( Charlie keeps bringing various ailments home with him from college. Man flu, diarrhoea & sickness :sick He’s not had a day off yet though funnily enough..... man flu a cold this time last year would have certainly warranted 2-3 days off school!

Could they not come & collect their own manure given it’s so close? Hope you charge accordingly for delivery!

My muck heap(s) are in my yard and so are the horses. I don't have a stable door and if I did, Cora get's really anxious when she is fastened in, so not feasible and I am indebted to these particular people as their land adjoins mine and has always been unfenced so my horses get to graze on their land too and the manure and eggs (when I have them) are a thank you for that since there is no tenancy agreement or money involved. It's not great land but neither is mine, so I really can't complain. Added to that, the couple will be approaching their 70's now and whilst still pretty fit, barrowing manure is a heavy job. My other manure clients pay for it to be delivered and the money goes to World Horse Welfare. And it saves me on gym fees, HaHa!
Going over to my sister's again today as it is her husband's birthday, so will be taking his card and she has asked if I can help do her GGs tonight. Got them a tour of a local artisan cheese factory, cheese tasting and lunch for his pressie which I think he will be thrilled with, as he is a real cheese enthusiast. :fl

Sounds like Charlie is really enjoying his course if he is battling through "man flu" to attend!! I hope that is the case. It should be the "time of his life" going to college. It is sad when some youngsters don't enjoy it for one reason or another. Hope he has made some good friends there.
