Chat room for non religious poultry keepers! :D

I try not to post him too much outside of his thread (mostly because I don't want to annoy people with the million-billion pictures I take of him 🤭 ), but my baby boy Casper is being such a handsome boy that I had to share here, too. :love

Well you know I can't get enough of him - he is so gorgeous - so fine with me!!
:love

OK yall I need your help. As the serama girls have started laying (well, only one of them for now) I've been getting these intrusive thoughts saying "maybe you should let them sit". I need you to remind me of how bad of an idea it is. They're too young and it will be very hard on their developing bodies. But I need to hear it from someone else🤣

Haha, I forgot that there were a couple Casper fans over here, too! Whoops! 🤭 I could stare at that handsome face all day so I'm definitely with you--but I also don't want to be one of those people that joins a thread and just completely takes over, either. I don't know if me bumping this one up every now and then when it was inactive counts as that already, though

How old are they? Lots of people do let pullets brood and don't have an issue... but if you feel that that's not in the best interest for your birds, then go with your gut on it. :hugs

I say go for it, I don't see anyone complain about Casper spam, I mean how could they:love?!

They are 5 months old. I just feel that this is too young for them, especially since they're so tiny, they're just beginning to grow into their bodies, and brooding is a major shift

They're too young to be moms. Let them have their carefree youth to squander on trips to the mall or the beach with their friends before they are tied down with chicks.

Goodness, 5 months is practically still a baby, lots of growing to do yet! I would probably not let them brood that young, either! I'd also be concerned about how committed they would be to the whole process. One of mine that I let brood young (I think she was around 9 months old?) was not great with the entire process and caused me a whole lot of stress while she was incubating and rearing her babies! Constantly letting the eggs roll out behind her in the nest, wanting to abandon her newly hatched babies for eggs, going to bed without leading her babies in with her so they were lost and cold, etc. :th Then again, the full adult hen out of the same line that I let brood this year was also terrible at mothering, so hard to say if that was age or genetics in my case, I suppose. 🤭

First eggs are also notorious for not being fertile, so wait a couple of months and enjoy mini omelets, lol!

Hmm, Cruella went broody at 6 months I believe, and she over-committed, which led to her quitting at 8 days (almost 2 weeks for her). Second time she went broody, she was 8 months. The brooding part wasn't a stroll in the park at first, but the mothering part was
