Chat Thread for the New Crazy 24 hour Auction

The gel I literally squirted just inside the vent. They'll pull it up furthur in. He liquid I just dripped on the vent and they'll suck it in on their own. The majority of it is pooped put quickly but enough stays for about 4 to 7 days to streak color on the eggs.

Quote: You could use the paste. The paste would require smearing inside the vent more than the gel. Hence, another reason for the rubber gloves!

What you want is a high color concentration for lasting effect. The liquid from the grocery store would probably work, but it is rather dilute, so would not show up as well as the paste or gel. I use pink and orange on green eggs currently. The lighter the eggs, the lighter colors you can use. If I were going to do it with a dark egg laying hen like BCM, I would use a blue or purple, though I haven't tried that yet.

By that I mean...Whats the point of npip?
Its dumb imho

It stands for National Poultry Improvement Plan and it's supposed to help keep our flocks healthier by stopping the spread of some diseases. I'm thinking I'm going to have to do it this year because while I've never been stopped shipping hatching eggs at the post office (I was doing mostly waterfowl and my state doesn't even do waterfowl for NPIP) since I have the cemanis now I'll most likely end up shipping some live birds, and I can't imagine I'll get away with that without being NPIP.

Also with the AI going across the country killing off or infecting 1000s of birds most states are in lock down not wanting any problems.
I had my ducks, turkey, and chickens tested today. I sell eggs and birds for food and it makes my customers feel better to know we are NPIP and that makes me feel better.

But yet NPIP doesn't include the test for AI. So what's the purpose. Pulloruim Typhoid hasn't been seen in my state for over 35 years. I have birds tested that I sell at public auction which is state law.

it is am option that is free in ohio with NPIP. it is required to have if you have waterfowl on the property

I'm with you on this, though I get a lot of flack about it. I think it gives people a total sense of false security. The things that are likely to wipe out your backyard flocks are not really part of the NPIP. Birds you get from NPIP flocks could still have a host of other problems. I personally don't want govt agents on my property throwing around their police mentality when they actually know very little.... I see this as yet another way to collect fees and have poultry owners on file. If I ship birds, I have them tested and get health certificates from a vet.
I know this is a can of worms and everybody should do what they feel is best for their situation. I personally have a dislike for this program. I used to hold federal and state permits for working with wild animals and I used to work closely with the Fish and Game. I've had a close look at that inside track of animal regulations...
I'll get off the soapbox, I just wanted to stand by bamadude.

Yeah, I don't like the idea of it much also, which is why I had avoided doing it up until now.

Yet it is a separate test and not part of the actual NPIP. Here anyway.

I have the AI and PT test done here in Alabama

That is an option about anywhere. But it is separate and costs extra to get done.

Don't take me wrong I'm all for getting the test done especially when there are tons of people firm all over getting together and you don't know what kind if conditions they all keep their birds in.

But, in my opinion NPIP is not for everyone. As long as there are periodic checks on your birds such as I have done in mine your okay to go.
