Cheap siding?

I've bought a LOT of osb plywood recently and our Lowes has 4X8 for $5.99 a sheet. It's really pretty cheap. Although, I'd never use it for actual "siding". I put 2 coats of porch paint on the floor and a few days later (before the roof was on) it rained on it. It didn't look bad... BUT, there were some bumps on it and it didn't look as smooth as it had before the rain. That convinced me that the floor needs vinyl and that my coop needs real siding. I'm just going to buy the T1-11, prime and paint it and not have to worry about it for years and years. I guess I like the 'Mike Holmes' approach of 'do it right the first time'. But of course, it all has to fit in your budget, so we all end up doing what we can. And that is understandable.

Cheap siding? 90% of my Coop is salvage, windows, framing, shingles, bricks etc. If you're going to keep the Coop for a long time, then the cheapest siding I used was exterior grade 5 ply 1/2 plywood. It was the only thing I bought for the coop, and the coop has been in use a couple decades now. I sealed all the joints prior to painting, made sure the roof overhanged all four sides, and put drip edges everywhere. I also tarred the edges of the roof prior to placing the metal drip edge on, same with the rain gutters---tar underneath.

This is what he is jack is talking about already comes painted and as far as siding goes it is pretty darn cheap!!

I used a man made siding product I got from Lowes.   It is like some kind of pressboard that  has the look of old barn siding. It comes in 4X8 sheets that only costs $18.00 a sheet.  The edges are made to overlap each other like T-111.  It has something like  a 40year guarantee on it.  It has been on my coop for over a year now, through all kinds of weather (Even a hurricane)  and hanging in there with no problems. I think HomeDepot has a similar product.  Good stuff and cheap compaired to T-111.

I know that this is a very old thread, but I see that you used a coop siding product similar to what I bought from Home Depot yesterday to start on my new coop. I was curious how yours held up. Did you have any problems with chipping/rotting away? The guy at the store said the wood was treated with chemicals to deter bugs. I was wondering if you had any adverse affects on your birds from chemicals? Did you paint or add interior walls for insulation? Any advice would be helpful! Thank you!
