Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
Hi! I JUST logged in and it’s August 😭 but just wanted to share that I have another business and I’m usually there working about four days a week. But I did get some chicks back in May of last year(?) and unfortunately I’ve lost so many of them to predators so I’m down to like four of that flock so that’s frustrating but I’m looking to order some more laying hens soon to replenish some of our birds.

I currently have 10 RIRs, 1 buff laced polish, 1 Ayam Cemani rooster, 4 Buff Orpington hens, and 1 Buff Orpington Rooster. Yes my roosters get along just fine. But I also have three Kune Kune pigs!

I was looking to add some Black Australorp hens, some Ameraucana hens, and maybe some Olive Eggers if I can find them! We’re also adding about 25-30 meat birds just to fill our freezer. Honestly we’re tired of grocery runs.

Where does everyone else order their chicks from(if that’s an option for you)?

I’ve ordered from cackle hatchery before and I like their options but I’ve also looked at Murray McMurray as well. I’m located in nw Florida.

Glad you’re doing well! I’ve ordered from Meyer, purely poultry, and Hoovers

I like Murray McMurray. I've also used MPC.

Kune Kune pigs are so adorable. :)

Life can be so busy! Predators can be terrible...

The last pullets I bought came from the tractor store. There is a feed store close to us that will let your order chicks to be delivered to the store too. That might be an option in your area.

Hello-- Sorry I was several months late to see this message!
But I came back to seek some advice and saw this.
We currently have 8 chickens...5 2-3 year old hens an 3 4 month hens.

We had a beloved hen die this morning of a total mystery cause, but it happened the same way that our last chicken died and now I'm really confused.

Think it might be coccidiosis? I took the previous one to a vet and he didn't even mention coccidiosis as a possibility! He said periostitis...but it doesn't seem possible to me.

I love my girls so much, it's so hard to lose them.

Thanks for welcoming me back, everyone <3

It is good to see you back! but I am sorry for the reason.

The vet likely said peritonitis. That can come from a stuck egg. You can try adding some black oil sesame seeds to their diet--not more than they can eat in 5 minutes a day. That can help with their egg laying.

Of course make sure they do not have parasites but the Vet should have checked for that.

So very sorry about your hen. :(

Right, I meant Peritonitis, but my keyboard is funny.

She didn't have the posture for Peritonitis. I'm thinking it may have been coccidiosis, but I'm unsure of what that looks like exactly.

I made a post here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/sudden-death-of-3-year-old-chickens.1636158/

But I'm just totally stuck and heartbroken.
Anyway, thanks for listening.
Corid is very safe for chickens and is good thing to Try!

They do statue standing, move very slowly and are usually puffed up.
