Chick Mysteriously Dies?

Here's a picture of the baby that died 2 days ago. Most of the others are whiter, though.

Well, I unfortunately don't have a thermometer, but if I had to guess, it's probably about 80-85 degrees in there. I had pine shavings in there, but the chicks kicked them through the mesh flooring. I'll send a picture in a second!

Do you have a heat lamp on them? For young chicks like that the recommended temperature is closer to 90 to 95 f, however their behavior is the best guide to know whether they are too warm or too cold. If they are huddled up most of the time, then they are likely a little too chilly

Note the pink beak, & legs. Leghorns will have yellow/orange legs, & be a more pale yellow down color.

Breed really doesn't matter for the issue at hand.

Sometimes chicks just don't make it.

Are these chicks on a wire floor? You mentioned the shavings fell through the wire.

They also should have a space about 90-95F and a cooler space about 75-80F that they can move to if they feel too warm

When I picked up my first set, I had 8 chicks. had a brooder plate, water, food and everything set up, they all seemed fine. All but the two ISA brown survived, these two were dead under the brooder plate the next morning.
When I got the replacements, they had pasty butt pretty bad and I had to really keep an eye on it the first week.
So, I am not sure what the difference was... I know that I will see a few dead at the store in the tank, I often just wonder if some are hardier than others.
