is chick poop different based on breed? I have 2 buff Orpingtons and 2 Rhode Island Reds that are all about 5-6 weeks old. The BOs poop has always been pretty firm while the RIRs poop has always been runnier and smellier. They all eat the same chick crumble and live in the same brooder. Does this seem normal?

If you have photos you wish to share, we will be happy to take a look.

Not all poop will be the same, so no, it's not by breed, it's by the individual. There's 2 types of poop as well. The regular poop is a firm(ish), shaped poop with a white cap and the other is called Cecal poop which is looser, stinky and sticky. Out of every 8-10 regular poops there will be a Cecal poop.

Could be that you are noticing Cecal poop when the RIR go. Consistency of poop is also dependent on water intake, they may drink more too(?)

Here's an article with photos that you might find helpful.

YESSSSS! That’s it! It’s cecal poop and it smells horrible. The article with pictures was so helpful! I only notice it with the RIRs but they all do it? I feel bad I’ve been blaming the Reds for all of it.
