Strange dog appeared in the backyard checking out my chickens the other day around 1:30 in the afternoon. Looking for a weakness in the fencing for the run. Hens beside themselves. Dog did not move when I shouted at it but took off running when I clapped my hands. Fortunately, has not come back in the last 2 days, so hope it is back home where it belongs.

I did not get a picture of it before it ran off, but it looked like this Pharaoh Hound.
Never seen one like it before around here. Probably some other breed of dog more common, but this is the closest picture I could find that matches my memory.

My chickens run to their pop door, take a look outside, if they see snow on the ground they turn around and don't leave the coop at all. Last winter they did not leave the coop for about 3 months.

Broody hens, or chickens who have actually laid eggs and are resting on them and waiting on them to hatch, will use noises and distinct chicken sounds.

Naturally, she will not release amongst these grumbles till she feels threatened or disturbed.

Have you ever tried to push a broody hen off her eggs or seen another chicken effort to do the very same?

Get too near a broody hen, and she'll holler at you-- comparable to a pet dog. This holler is trying to notify you to leave and vanish rapidly-- her hormones are increasing, and she desires absolutely nothing to do with you.

She primarily does not seek you were getting anywhere near her eggs or chicks!

Regularly, a broody hen will scream more loudly at you, turning her whine into a full-blown, irritated tantrum. She might likewise puff up her plumes and peck at you up till you leave.

And yes, that's a quarter and a tiny eyedropper for scale with our lone, three day old Nankin peep. I LOVE these tiny babies!
