Chicken impaled lower bill on hook, just found her hanging

She is now able to stand up for 10-20 seconds at a time but she is unsteady. She drank a tiny amount of water on her own but doesn’t want to eat- I wouldn’t either. I have her in a slightly lit guest room with a few afghans and some water, plus cooked oatmeal that is cold. I have the potential to see a vet but I’m not sure how traumatizing the 45 minute ride would be.

That sounds good.

Good that she tried to drink.
Just let her rest and be warm tonite. ...reassess in the morning, she may not need a vet. Chicken can heal up from some pretty rough wounds/traumas.

Did the hook tear thru her skin?
Were her feet off the ground?

I ended up taking her in and we are still here. It was a miracle finding one who would look at her, much less treat her.

As a nurse, the most important things are water, electrolytes and sugar to survive shock. She doesn't need food at this time. I would recommend a trip to the vet, they may prescribe antibiotics to aide in healing. I would keep her inside warm and close so you can look in on her often.
You are absolutely right, I’m an RN too (but human doesn’t always translate well to animal)! She is going to get a lot of fluid under the skin, some ongoing pain killers, antibiotics for the wound, and they recommended I pull another chicken out of the coop to stay with her for the 3-4 days she can’t go back- of course, that opens up a whole slew of other issues. They told me her chances wouldn’t have been good staying at home because the side of her face is swelling up from the trauma and she can’t move her beak enough to drink well. I’m glad they are treating her so well and I can hear her raising hell in the back while they’re giving her the fluid! They emphasized again and again that she really needed to have pain medicine to heal-
