Chicken impaled lower bill on hook, just found her hanging

I’m still curious what the hook looks like.
I’ve posted the picture- it was not what the cage was hanging from, it was actually tucked into the wiring since we suspend them in a different way. Somehow it came loose and the rest is unfortunate history.

This is precious Brenda, headed back out to a kennel in the coop where she can hang out with her sister until the antibiotics are finished. Once she went in, the others didn’t seem too excited about it so we hope it will be a smooth transition back. She looks great, is obviously feeling good, and is back to eating me out of house and home (she really enjoyed the extra treats she got). Her throat is healing slowly but it isn’t hurting her ability to swallow and it should be done enough that no one will attack her. I will forever think of her as my “miracle”- thanks to everyone for all their help and good wishes! :celebrate:love

That hook is pretty impressive. Pretty sure I have a suet cage with something similar. I've taken to using a carabiner to clip treat cages (so I'll replace the one on my suet cage with the same), figured they're probably a little safer in the fact that it takes more than just some jiggling to unclip it, but still easy enough to add/remove things.

That’s a wonderful idea! We just started compressing everything that could potentially catch them after this incident. I’ll use your method from now on! :thumbsup

Brenda is back in the coop with the group and has had zero problems integrating... its almost like they missed her. Maybe they were traumatized by watching what was happening to her, who knows? Anyway, all is well in my poultry world and I thank everyone who so kindly offered advice and sympathy. Gooooo Brenda!!!:yesss:

So glad she's doing well and recovered. No doubt that was a scary thing to find! I use 's' hooks from the hardware store for hanging most things and I get really big ones so they are too big to be swallowed if one should get dropped. I also use carabiners and spring hook latches. It's amazing what kind of trouble some chickens can get themselves into. So glad this time it's a happy ending.
