Chicken in the woods (and more woods)

I need to get some pics of the flock but it is getting so dark!!

They go nuts over the barley now, so I’m really glad I got that going. I put some on the pigeon porch and it disappeared, so maybe they like it too. Pigeons are now sleeping in the chicken part of the enclosure every night- they seem to like the 2x4 chicken roosts better than the blue plastic “v” roosts I got that are meant for pigeons.

I’d blocked the gap between the top of the chicken wall and the wire roofing , about five inches, with cardboard to keep the pigeons out, but once they started just walking in the front door, I took that down. Now we’re back to a nice amount of ventilation all around the whole indoor part.

Worried that the pigeons roosting may discourage the chickens from learning to roost at night since now they are all down on the ground again. It’s very warm this week, so perhaps they are just a bit unsettled.

Cookies and cream hanging out at 5am with the chickens down below. Pigeons are half the size of the chickens at this point and are not people friendly yet. Getting a bit closer to them every day- just trying to acclimate them to having my hand near them. Then I’ll introduce treats.

Alert, alert! A chicken is on the roost! Just checked my coop cam and one of them is up there! Others are all still on the ground, but it is a start. Maybe she just got stuck up there when the coop light went out? We are at about eight weeks, so right around when you saw it happen, lightm! Thanks for the info.

I gave them the first “crop” from my barley tower today. They weren’t so sure about it, but it was all gone when I got home tonight.

Something scared them when I was hanging with them this afternoon. They all froze, then Atilla and Cloud made trilling noises back and forth. I found I could pick any of them up and they’d just lean into my body for comfort. Gotta be hard being prey to so many things out there!
I remember when my babies went to their big girl house outside. They were about 7 weeks old. What a beautiful set up, so why were they sleeping in a cuddle puddle in the corner on the floor?? It took 2 weeks and I'll never forget how happy I was to one day see all 6 roosting! Love the chooks! 🐓❤️

I just read this for the first time and I am dying this is so funny! How's Dolly doing?
Dolly is doing great! A little more standoffish than at the beginning, but Midnight, Beans and Shakipiyo have been making up for that. Atilla is continuing to look more and more rooster-ish, but is still relatively friendly. Won't run away when I put my hand on them, at least. But the other three come right up to me. Beans doesn't want to be touched, but gets right in my face.
I grow Lions Mane mushrooms! We dry them out and i make powders and dual extract tinctures for health. Lions mane has an amazing feature called NGF, nerve growth factor.
That is so cool! It's great living in the woods where we see all these things coming out at various times of year. Haven't tried eating anything (except maple syrup), but hopefully the amount of time we spend out and about gives us some benefits!

That's awesome! I love chickens warming up to people, it's just so wholesome!
