Chicken not eating, swollen abdomen, dirty rear

Hi all, I had to put Lucy down yesterday and trying to find out what was wrong to avoid it next time. She was approx 4yrs Hyline breed. She was walking very slowly in a squat like position, feathers all fluffed up. She had a very messy rear. Her comb was fallen over and going purple on the tips. Her stool was dry although to have a dirty rear it must have been quite loose at some stage. She smelled bad when I put her down. Her abdomen was very tight. The other chooks are all ok.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm happy to do some research but not sure where to start.
