Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

I used to have a mouse problem, now I have a cat problem!

This is 'Angel', our neighbors' cat. She is quite the hunter, and has "demoused" the chicken house! There are baby chicks in there and she show NO interest in them! Phew!

Cute problem. As long as she doesn't hassel the chickens, sounds like the prefect solution to mice. (And you don't have to feed her)

When I was taking care of my DIL's chickens, I went in the coop to gather the eggs and there in one of the boxes was my son's cat, gone in for a nap. I think he thought he was a chicken as he'd try to rub up against them like cats do, and get rewarded with a sharp peck on the noggin.

Hi yall I'm Frankie aka Emmalion and I am the crazy chicken lady. Or so says the BF. I started out last summer after getting my brothers coop and chickens. Soon after that it turned into an all out war against my neighbors dogs. Were talking waking up grabbing the shotgun and unloading it into the pack of mutts while only wearing a tank top and underroos. Yes I am classy!

The flock size has grown and shrunk over the months. We are all currently suffering from spring fever and cannot wait to get out and start the new areas.

My first attempt at incubating will be soon. Borrowing one this weekend and I have been saving up my eggs from my 2 lovely girls.

New coop construction is to start soon and a fenced in area to put federal prisons to shame.

I hope to enjoy all of your company.

Hiya Emmalion!

Wow, war on dogs! I hope that war is over now!

I always say goodbye to my chickens right before leaving home each day. Recently I was told I smelled "like a chicken"! Not like chicken!

I now visit my birds, then change shirt/ shoes, etc.

Good luck incubating, I just barely survived a recent bout of Incubitis! I spent hundreds of dollars and set more than 200 eggs and ended up with 4 chicks!

I sure had fun, and at least I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on drink or drugs! Er, oh, justifying. Well, it don't matter now, I sold the bators and I am very happy with the umpteen hatchery chicks and 3 of the 4 that I hatched!

Hey hey
Unfortunately that war is far from over. *sigh* I should of had buckshot in the gun but I only had rabbit and squirrel at the moment. But they dropped my girl and she came home 4 hours later with some bald spots. I now have a gamecam up on a tree looking over my coop area when I am at work. My last loss was in December when the dogs tore open the bottom door of the pen and took 2 of my girls out through the bottom of the coop. I found a leg .....

and feathers but no carcass. Everyone has been on high alert and heavy duty security so coop fever is running ramped.

Any suggestions on how to keep them from pecking each other so much right now. It seems like they are as mad at all the snow as i am. They are delicate and don't want to get their feet cold. lol

But other than my flock of 4... pathetic I know I also have 2 dogs and 2 cats. My dogs love the chickens they sometimes even share food *gasp*

I've been reading up on the incubation here and decided to join up so I have a great little support group to lean on when things don't go right.

Darn dogs! Why can't they just leave those poor birds alone?

No offense to dog lovers, but those dogs are really dumb. Risking their lives for a chicken dinner? Why don't they just catch some wild mice or something?

I hope your incubating goes well!

How many eggs are you planning to hatch?

After I check to the coop this afternoon I should have around 10 or so ready to go. I only have my 2 girls left with 2 lovely Roos so there shouldn't be an issue with fertility

One RIR and one Americana roo with a RIR and Welsummer hen.

I have a not so sensible neighbor who's dogs have tried eating my chickens. She told me it is their nature and to hunt birds!
