Congratulations!
I would go with his recommendation on what he thinks would be the best mix into your flock and the most likely to be a SQ bird. Why are you against an an adult hen? The fact that he is a BYC-er is great!
It will absolutely be a feather in his cap if he sells a Show Quality bird for a reasonable price to a beginning exhibitor and a fellow BYC-er!
If you have a great experience with him, RAVE about it! Breeders really keep poultry strong! Right now poultry is VERY popular, but there have been many times when poultry was not as "IN" and dedicated breeders kept the rare breeds going and the more common breeds genetically diverse! Ask him how long he has been raising these breeds, and if the answer is more than 1-2 years, thank him for his work and dedication!
I hope you don't mind me going on like this, but I really enjoy writing on this forum and I look back to my own years growing up and raising chickens for show. We didn't have internet or immediate access to other chicken enthusiasts for help and advice.
I learned, mostly by doing the wrong thing. I told you about my very first order of LOVELY "Cinnamon Queens" and how pretty the girls were and how I totally lost interest in those pretty birds and sold them before they even started to lay, because no one told me that they weren't a "pure breed" and could not be shown. I still regret that and one of these years I am going to order me some Cinnamon Queens again. I would have ordered some this year, but I stuck to Ideal Poultry and they don't seem to have them, unless their Gold S/L is the same, but mine were more reddish-orange than all of the GSLs I have seen.
PS chicken stalker - I heartily agree! I NEED to count them, but they never seem to hold still or all be visible! Ahem, I think Daisy chick has the same problem lol
