Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

And I just bought 4 Cayuga ducklings at my favorite feed store. This afternoon. Yup, this very afternoon.

Y'see, I went to the feed store with a dozen fertile eggs for an employee there who has already bought 3 standard cochin chicks I hatched. (The feed store doesn't carry cochins at all, and she has some that are "the standard black" as she put it, and wanted some color. Welllllll... I happened to have just hatched silver and gold laced cochins that particular week... She and I talk often once they found out I hatched Trader Joe's chicks.)

Enough back story about the reason I was going to the feed store. Louie my Cayuga drake is a widower, since his wife Thelma went broody in a secret yet unprotected place and a predator got her about four days into her hidden "confinement." I have 3 call ducklings in a brooder right now, but I had four call ducks my landlady made me get rid of (I found a great home with kfchicken). Call ducks are loud, and two of them were pure white. Their activity and noise narked me out.

I needed some bales of pine shavings for the new coop under construction. On sale, got 'em. But there were Cayuga ducklings there too!!! Straight run, of course. I figure with four of 'em, I should get at least one "wife" for Louie. Cayuga ducks are VERY quiet, plus they are Ninja stealth ducks, being all black.

AND my landlady has been worried about Thelma; I haven't yet told her of Thelma's demise. It's a plan.

My 3 call ducklings are a couple of weeks old now. The 4 Cayuga ducklings are 4 days old...

I didn't plan on buying them when I left for the feed store, honest!

Yeah, I do have it bad! But in a good way?!?!

I need a little help, 2/4 of my White AM eggs have pipped. One has pipped in the fat end, but the other has pipped in the pointy end...That's bad isn't it?

Is there anything I can do, other than sit on my hands?

I have heard that they will hatch out ok. I have never had it happen to me personally, but I have read on other's hatches and it worked out in the end. I would say just keep an eye on it and see if it is able to zip on it's own.

Welcome to the thread! 21 chicks is manageable! They are so small at that age, that they don't even count as 1! This is what I tell myself, anyway! So...for fear of sounding stoopid...what is a Welp?

I've been researching Ameraucana color varietys and found I must have some Buffs ( LF and Bantam ) and some LF BBS and Silked Ameraucanas!

Oh, not to mention Brown Red, Silver and Splash Am Bantams!

Check with Chickenstalker (Karen)...she is breeding Buffs, I gave her my Buff Am hen. I had the silvers, they were pretty, but too flighty for me. I actually hatched a few silver chicks...and I hatched some buff am chicks. So stoopid as those were two colors I wanted to get rid of. Who am I kidding, I can't seem to say no to Ameraucanas! My friend Bailey gave me a Blue Split Silkied Am roo. I have black and blue am chicks in the brooder now that I hope to use to breed him with in a few months. The brown reds are not as common...I'd like to see more people get into breeding them.

I'd love to try hatching out silkied AM - I had silkies for a while, but they were just too high maintenance for me. But a silkied AM? That would be the ticket! I don't even care what color they are. Maybe my next hatch.

I have been so good at passing the bins at the feed store. I like the system they have now, though. They have the tubs surrounded by gats so people can't go and grab chicks willy-nilly. I heard there were teens in a TSC (somewhere here on the east coast) that were grabbing chicks and squeezing them to death! Makes me want to get out my switch and tan a few hides!!!!

I've seen kids go and grab chicks (without parental supervision) and hold them open handed and the chicks fall to the floor. Ugh. I hate being the one to step in, but dang! Some people are so oblivious to what their kids are doing, and what their role as a parent should be! I'm stepping off my soapbox now. Sorry, Linda! I hijacked your post!
