I'm trying very hard not to count my adults..I know I have 60+ chicks right now..not counting the 100++ in the incubators...need I say more?

Well...it is a good thing I didn't start my chicken counting today...I would need to add a few more!!! My first broody momma hatched herself some younguns!

Mom is a Black tailed White Japanese (itty bitty lil thing) and dad is a frizzle WC Chocolate Polish. These are going to be some wacky lil babies!

I really don't have a place for her to raise her babies on her own, so I grabbed a dog carrier, filled it with shavings, put her in there, then the chicks and eggs and she tucked them all under herself again! One of the eggs had a pip in it. I hope I didn't mess the hatch up.

Now to put a feeder and waterer in there. She's such a good momma. Been broody since sometime in February! She deserves to mother these chicks she's waited so long for!

Oh, I love broody babies!!

She looks like an awesome momma.

Well, I am off again on another adventure - this time to Washington DC!

I hope my chickens will be healthy and safe AND WATERED while I am gone. I am going to get up tomorrow morning and fill ALL 8 waterers (ranging from an 8 gallon to a quart jar waterer for my little ones). With those and a few milk jugs, hopefully they will have enough while I am gone and my chicken caregiver will not have TOO much to do!.

I also got a dog waterer (in the chicken yard, of course), that attaches to a hose tap right next to chicken yard and fills and shuts off, it is an LG/ Miller Mfg product, it has a little float valve in it! Hopefully the geese will have enough water that way!

We have had a bear around here lately, it tipped over the neighbor's trash can, which sits about 20 feet from my hen house!

Fearful thoughts of bear, tearing henhouse door off hinges and snacking.

I need to put drop-in bars on the doors for night-time security! I also want motion lights out there!

I have an electric fence, better put that around hen yard (on the outside, of course)! All in good time, I guess!

Y'all have a great week!

Uh- oh! Bears????? Yes, bars! ASAP! And a tripwire that when triggered shoots pepper spray into the bear's eyes

Well, the addiction is spreading. My uncle wants chickens. 3 hens. He wants them to be Raiders' colors
roll.png
So he wants Barred Rocks, Turkens, and Australorps. I'm improving my A-frame now that it's empty and giving it to him. I'm also going to help him build the run. Or at least, I was SUPPOSED to help this week, but he never called. Perhaps chickens will not be.

But then a neighbor of mine is coming over to my house today to talk chicken. Her daughter wants to raise hens and sell the eggs. But there's a limit to number of fowl here, so... maybe I'll have a business partner. We can pool eggs and split the money. BUT they also are wondering if I will give or sell them one of my laying hens. That poses a problem. Poppy and Flutter are both (don't tell them) pains, but I still love them
hmm.png
And Gamma would miss Poppy and Lily would miss Flutter...

ETA: Guess what? I fed Poppy a snake that I found under that A-frame coop. It was about 3 inches long. No idea what type, but it wasn't a rattler. And rattlers are the only poisonous native snakes in California.
