I'm glad your chickens are all right! You are lucky. Did the fire start because you were heating the coop?

You guessed right! Now I'm almost afraid to heat it anymore... I don't think I will until it gets WAAAAAY cold again...

I have heat to my chickens. I know it is frowned upon, but we feel we are being careful. We are using 2 heat lamps...partly for supplemental light, partly because the wind whips through our property and makes it so COLD. I have gotten a few frozen/split eggs because it got so darn cold out there.

Yeah, up here we went through a cold streak... I lost like a dozen eggs... But as soon as we started heating, it got warm again...

lol The lamp fell down into the pine shavings and started a fire, we had a hole burnt through one wall that went outside, and another that went into the run. It completely melted our feeder too. I don't like to pick favorites, but I have a hen that's really special to me... She was trapped behind the fire in her nest. It was more smoldering, super-hot wood chips and melted plastic than it was fire, but it was so smoky we couldn't breathe. I ended up going into the coop to save her.

We were SO lucky none of them died from the smoke!

Did you ever find SF's? Have you been inquiring from the people on the SF thread?

What do you usually search? Sorry, I couldn't find anything

No heat here! I do have a small 7 watt nightlight in my back coop because some of my younger girls haven't figured out where the roost is yet.

It's been down to zero and all are fine. I did get a very very small amount of frostbite on the tips of the leghorn combs (they are HUGE) but that stopped when I covered the heated water dish at night. Oddly enough no frozen eggs yet. Not sure why that is. Or none that have been VISIBLY frozen.

My little hatchlings are all doing well! I was worried about the one I 'helped' but checked my 'icu' and all three of my later hatch chicks were fluffed up and jumping around. Yay.

Mugs, have you tried one of those heat lamps from premier1 supplies? (I think that's the name).. I have one and they are HUGE but 100% safe with a gigantic guard. Not so good for a brooder as they are massive and I've found they don't reflect heat where I want it. I have one in my little growout banty coop with just a 100W bulb as that coop is pretty dark. I'll get rid of it when I can add more chickens in there to keep them company and give them warmth.

What do you guys think? Frizzled cochin? BCM? Mutt? Do BCM have feathered legs?

FBCM's have feathered legs. The one that just passed away and her sister had/have gorgeous FULL, fluffy feathered legs...even as chicks. Another great pic featherz! If it is a frizzled cochin...what color/size will it be?

No idea! the eggs came from this auction.. I know one of the FEE didn't make it. I also had a few eggs in there from ebay that are 'colored egg mutts' with all sorts of daddy/mommy choices. I know some of the frizzled cochin made it and all four of the BLRW.

Group shot!

I have no idea what that cream colored chick is. Must be one of the mutt eggs.

That cream one looks like she/he has slate/green toe(s)...or is that just shadow? Could she be an EE? I want a frizzled large bird. I have the white crested frizzle chocolate polish roo from Gretchen, but he's bantam. I would like to get a fatty LF frizzle. You did good featherz. 13 cutie patootie chickies!

I think the white one is from the mutt seller - s/he states in the auction that the hen choices are: black Australorps, blue laying aracaunas, welsummers, countless Isa Browns and isa reds, black alstrop x black silkie, Barred Rock x Aracauna, Isa Brown x Aracauna, Brahma x cochin, cochin x aracauna, aracauna silkies, silkie seremas (mixed not fluffy seremas, but extra toed feathered leg little upright soldier girls), Olive eggers, a few green leg hatch game hens, Silver laced wyndottes, 3 dark cornish and 2 blue laced dark cornish hens.. roos are White Jersey Giant, Partridge Aracauna, many Black copper marans, Blue Copper and also Red maran (feathered shanks all marans roos), Mottled cochin bantam roosters, 1 serema rooster, 3 bantam cornish roosters. So as you can see.. it could be anything!! Surprise egg!

I started out with I think 14 - that's what I figured would work for eggs. Now I'm like you, I probably have over 100 with the chicks. Just built a chicken I guess you would call it a cabinet/display that has 4 levels. One with a brooder, then the cages for the stages before they go out. I purchased a hovabator at first, then expanded to a homemade soda machine with a glass front turned into an incubator from another obsessed one nearby who built it originally. I didn't like to thermostat, and a few other things needed to be tweeked. Now it's perfect, but adds to the addiction. This spring we plan on fencing the entire property, (almost 2 acres) with privacy fence and expanding a little more. Looking way to forward to retirement. Then I'll probably grow feathers myself!
