Yah, well, it was a bunch of teenagers who didn't want to kill them at all. Tends to slow the process down.

Some Buff Orpington Chicks I Hatched Out This Spring - I hatched these BO chicks from my Hatchery Stock flock back in the spring. All these chicks were boys..except one pullet. All these babies died to the heat/preditors this summer. R.I.P. babies!! Then later on I sold my HS BO flock..I currently only have one HS Buff hen, J.T. and one nasty, ugly BO cockerel that is soooo ugly..but I'm unable to get rid of him because ever time I mention getting rid of him..certain little children start to cry...

Could you not have your dog around chickens. It seems the dog isn't very trustworthy around freed birds. You could lock him up when you let out the birds or at least put him on a chain away from them. Just saying.

I still cry when we process our extra roos. it never gets easy.

I think it would've been harder for me if he hadn't have been attacking us. He drew blood several times and I just kept picturing him attacking the kids when they went in to feed the birds. He was also beating up on the hens a bit. It helped me not feel bad. I did have a moment of queasiness when I was plucking, but I got over it. I would have a hard time with a bird I liked. I would have to not name them, but I'm not sure even that would help.

I'm with you, Muggs. I'd like to raise and butcher my own animals, but when I've petted and cared for something it gets harder! It helps too, I think that my family hunts and I help DH clean the birds he brings home. BUT, I never saw those animals alive, fed and watered them, and carried them around either... So, I echo your {sigh}.

LOVED the cattle, BTW! Could we have a bigger pic?? I'm too young for bifocals and I had to squint...

We butchered our first rabbit last night. That was an AWFUL experience. I really want to take raising our own food seriously, but wonder if the gut wrenching sadness that comes with it makes it all worth while? And to think I want to raise Dexter cattle for meat (and milk)! I'll never be able to live with myself!

Jloeffler - I know, it's quite strange that even if the animal is agressive towards you, you still feel awful about killing it.

Miss Lydia - I can't watch..the men have to do it. I just have to lock myself in the house because I can't bare to see or hear them being butchered.

Muggsmagee - Rabbits??!! OMG!

We have two indoor Shih-Zue dogs and two outdoor dogs, a Border Collie, and a Australian Shepard. The two indoor dogs, Gypsy and Coconut (Peanut) are both females, and of course both the outdoor dogs are males.

Gypsy and Coconut live in the house and are only outside when they need to go to the bathroom. However, we can't stand right there waiting for 40 minutes for them to do their stuff so we of course leave them outside.

When Gypsy killed the Am pullet, that was when I had my 70++ chicks up in the yard. However, since they're moved out to the barn now I didn't think she would bother the Sussex juvenile..I was wrong. She cornered one while outside, and of course killed it. So then I had to move my two remaining Sussex juveniles out to the barn, along with my Sussex hen and her baby. She won't bother the adult Sussex, but I'm worried about the peachicks...but I don't have any other place to put them so...

We still have 3 extra roos to deal with and I think my dh is having a hard time with it too. He's the one that does the actual killing, I either go in the house or turn my back and put my fingers in my ears so i don't have to hear the ax. I try to think of myself as a pioneer woman but I sure fall short.

You ask to see cow's and then no comment,...bad duck.

Are those random cows or your very own? I NEVER want to assume here!
