My mother and I were so proud of the new chicken coop with the fool proof fenced in area. We ate home grown eggs and the colors were beautiful (blue, pink & green) from our special hens. Whistler, the rooster was young and vigorous, but like the hens...rather new at dealing with danger. They are only 11 months old, but good producers; until three weeks ago. We would hear the hens protesting and run out back to the hen house only to find no threat around. I noticed they kept scratching at the fence base until it showed the lower edge (we had buried 8 inches deep). I felt confused when the eggs came up missing. I actually saw them break the shells and eat the eggs, then solved that with oyster shells and a pinch of salt in the watering bowl. We were gardening and found a 5 and a half foot chicken snake (the male) and got rid of it promptly thinking our problems were over.

A week later I am noticing a loud protest and general flapping down in the chicken coop again, and upon investigating it found the 6 foot female coiled and lifting her head up several inches threatening Whistler, our rooster. I ran and got the hoe, but slamming it down two or three times didn't do the trick. I was alone and it slithered out from under my hoe (guess I don't have the strength to make any more than a few bruises) to coil around the hoe head. It was big and around an inch thick plus very actively trying to get away! OMG! I hollered for our neighbor, but the chicken snake struggled out the 4 foot distance to escape my dull hoe. Guess that answers my questions about the missing eggs too, but I'm upset that chicken snake is still out there. It had babies too, cause I caught a one in the woodpile before running into the male a week ago. I feel shaky after the experience and wonder what my options are now.

Anyone have suggestions? Thanks, Rach

Sharpen your hoe. I have no problem with carrying a handgun but that's not for everyone.

LOL, my neighbor down the street does carry a hand gun and was trying to shoot a cotton-mouth when her pastor drove by and shook his head...he told her later "I wasn't going to even ask what you were doing!" She told us the story and I couldn't stop laughing from all the expressions on her face. She told us she would rather "kiss a snake on the mouth than deal with an Alabama spider any day of the week!" I will sharpen our hoe first and I am not a good shot, so the thing was I was trying to hold it's head secure to grab it, but it was just to big. Dang!

I keep a pair of loppers next to a square point shovel in several places in my yard. If I have a snake that I need to dispense with, I can pin it down with the shovel, then control it with the loppers. This works well especially well when I'm alone.

I don't know what a looper is though, but a backup plan seems to be necessary with the problem in our area. We have fox, raccoons, neighbor cats, etc.) and they all want a chicken dinner. I have to say if something is going after our sweet hens, I am the first in line, cause I like the eggs (they taste different from store bought ones). I want to protect them, yet my ignorance is not blissful. z

Good technique on the pin with the hoe (I was successful when I had help last week), but the snake I battled for only about 5 minutes alone in our actual chicken pen was too strong and got away. So much for dull equiptment. It was big (about 6 foot long and thick around an inch)! OMG!

Wow, here we call that a bolt cutter and yea it would do the job. The snake I was struggling with was very wiggly and threatening to our rooster to get away. I guess I needed help to secure it cause the looper looks like it needs two hands to work it properly. I had on sneakers and shorts with bare legs and could not hold the sucker down with the dull hoe (didn't want to risk a bite on skin cause of the size). Thanks for educating me on how to do more than just cause bruises. z
