today was a FANTASTIC swap!!!
We were very worried about lightning. we drove in and out of heavy rain on the drive to Walpole. When we arrived it was dry.
we set up the tents very quickly just in case.
we didn't have one drop of rain . there was a steady stream of customers all day.
I arrived with a full load of critters and came home with 4 bunnies and 2 chicks.

I guess I was confused about the rooster fee as well, I mean we pay someone to take the roosters, then they get 2.00 and a rooster they will more than likely go slaughter for dinner and it' all raised up for them. If thats the case, I'll take any of y'lls rooster cause who can turn down free food and a few bucks to go with it! Or do they keep them alive?? I

Went to today's swap intending to get turkeys, came home with 3 ducklings and 1 frizzle chick instead! Thanks!

what are the prices like?? I haven't been yet but am thinking about stopping in at a swap, bought 30 straight runs from Walpole Tractor supply over the summer to extend my flock and ended up with only 3 pullets out of the bunch.

Re: the rooster guy - once you're NPIP, the whole easy rooster thing stops abruptly. You can't take anybody else's roosters unless they're NPIP too (and most people who are NPIP are experienced enough to take care of their own rooster problem), and you get a lot more aware of disease.

The rooster guy is there to provide a service for those who can't or won't do it themselves. It's not like he's getting plump cornish x 8-week-olds; he's taking anything and everything, regardless of breed or age or anything else. There's no NPIP requirement, so he's potentially exposing his own birds to stuff. I would find it hard to believe that many end up feeding him or his family. It really is a favor to people, and it's not unreasonable that they pay a little for his gas and trouble.

We humanely euthanize our roosters with CO2 and feed them to our dogs, basically as soon as we can tell they're roosters (so 2-3 weeks old). The canister was $20. Every time we refill the CO2 canister it's $2, plus our gas to go get it refilled. That takes care of maybe 10 baby cockerels. If I were doing roosters for other people, I'd need to charge for it too.

How does one get in touch with said rooster guy? Just case I ever need one. May possibly need to cull soon, and I'm not ready to do it myself! :/
