Hello! I’m new to backyard chicken. My husband and I live in South Carolina. Our first batch of 4 heritage birds turned out to all be roosters, so we had to rehome them. Now, We have an adult white Americauna hen and adult White Face Spanish hen. We have 10 week old Light Brahma (not sure on her🤞gender) and a Black Copper Maran rooster.

We just lost our 10 week old beautiful, sweet splash Orpington hen over the weekend. We had them all sleeping together at night in our Omlet Eglu Cube for a couple weeks, and I found her dead in the morning on Saturday. 😭 thankfully, there was no blood coming out, so we guessed that there was a predator around, and they got scared and accidentally trampled her. Any thoughts? I hope to get a couple more splash Orpingtons soon. She was so lovely. Our first Orpington rooster was a sweetie too.

We also just got a couple 8 week Copper Maran hens (one black sex link, one blue). They are minuscule in comparison to our black copper Maran roo. He’s only 10 weeks, but he’s literally 3x the 8 week Marans sizes. I keep telling them to eat more! Lol. Our goal is to have heritage chicken breeds with a variety of colored eggs.

We’ve got an amazing Jack Russel Terrier name Jane who is 8, and she seems to be fine with our birds now that we’ve trained her. She used to want to eat them as tiny chicks, but I made her learn to submit to them, and she’s good with them now. She’ll sit and people watch right next to the older hens while they have a dust bath. Our roo was hesitating being caught and flew hard into her side. She didn’t fight back or even think about retaliating. I’ve left her alone with the bigger birds for a couple minutes while I run in the house, and she’s only been concerned about staying at my side, not really taking an interest in the birds. We wanted a proper chicken dog, but so far she’s doing great at keeping the owls and hawks away when the birds free range.

Here are a few images of my Brahma. Think Mulan-Pria is a hen or a roo?

Thanks for reading my mini essay.
Welcome to BYC. I’m also fairly new and I hope you feel welcome here! Feel free to start a convo with me :) I can help identify the genders if needed at all :)

Hello Tiffany, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
He's a cockerel.
Do you have multiple coops? Those Eglu coops are very tiny. I can't imagine keeping more than a few birds in them.
We technically have two, it's the one that the Brahma and Black Copper Maran roo spend the bulk of their time in. We have a 13 ft. tractor on our Eglu, and we are trying to free range them in the evenings. The Eglu we have is the bigger one, and from what I've researched, people can fit 6 of the Brahmas in there, so I figured that we'd be fine with our small flock. We live in a neighborhood, so we're only supposed to have a max of 8 chickens. 🙄 I dream of a farm some day, but these are our first steps. :)

Oh thanks! I would very much appreciate help identifying the Brahma. Sorry, super new here. How do I go about starting a convo with just one person.

There are a couple of ways to starting a conversation with someone:
* Hover your cursor on someone's avatar and it will bring up an option to start a message.
* Or at the top right hand part of the screen you will see an envelope, and click on that to start a conversation. (It that may be slightly different if you're using a phone)
Sometimes you'll also see conversations referred to as PM's or private messages.
