chickenstock 2 for oxford maine- August 15th

Oh, BTW I found this article, please read it and feel free again to contact the State of Maine Poultry Technician...
Swabbing for disease... http://www.cfsph.iastate.edu/Factsheets/pdfs/fowl_typhoid.pdf

Samples to collect

Before collecting or sending any samples from animals
with a suspected foreign animal disease, the proper authorities should be contacted. Samples should only be sent under secure conditions and to authorized laboratories
to prevent the spread of the disease.
Swabs or tissue samples should be collected for bacterial
isolation. Samples can be taken from live birds, fresh carcasses, or freshly frozen carcasses. In live birds, swabs should be taken of the cloaca and conjunctivae. At necropsy,
swabs may be used to sample the carcass or tissue samples can be collected aseptically from the spleen, liver, gall bladder, kidneys, heart, lungs, digestive tract, ova, testes, or affected joints. S. gallinarum can also be isolated...more to this....

This is the page where I found this, so Tony, the proffessionals are correct for a change! The above article was printed in 2005.

There are a lot of folks coming out of the wood work, there will also be pheasants available, and a gentleman looking for good quality Silkie Rooster. I hate to say this, but this guy is in want of a silkie that meets the Book of Standards. Either swap or buy.

A ferrier will be setting up for demonstrations, a couple jewelry makers, and the line up is growing. Hope to see some Maine folks there!

Hey Spook! I met Bill today and he also tested my birds! NPIP certified!! YAY!! Bill is very knowledgeable. He knows his stuff! I ask him about the swabbing and he said that not only is it being done at the chicken stock, It's being done by the Wildlife preservation, testing game birds, waterfowl, anything from a sparrow to a Bald eagle! The SWAB test is just to gather information about viral diseases. Its a Voluntary thing.
I ask Bill about shipping Hatching eggs out of the state and he said you have to be NPIP certified.
Shipping birds out of state: NPIP Cert. and health certificate from Vet.
If the State you are shipping to reguires an Avian flu Cert. Then you must have that done to before shipping.
Testing for the Avian Flu in your flock is done 4 times a year.
I am on a waiting list to be a tester for the state of Maine. Bill will be training me.
Great Guy!
Hope to see you at the chicken stock!

Seems like that would be a fun job...you'll get to see so many different types of poultry!

yah, lots of fun, seeing new poultry and poking them for blood!
congrats mainely seramas on your NPIP testing and great you are going to be a tester (just yanking your chain about the blood letting). I know we need more testers in the state. Karl Rau used to be a tester and he says he is now out of it although still raising birds.

That is incredible, I am glad that you met Bill, I've only talked to him on the phone and cant wait to meet him. You confermed everything I had tried to teach others! Thank you for validating and also validating the swab tests on the birds.
Did he mention that I've been a headache to him!!! LOL
I told him on the phone one day that I was looking forward to meeting him and that once he was able to recognize me...he would be able to dodge me at the poultry shows! hee hee, he has a great sense of humor and only works for the good of us.
They need to recall test kits, people are keeping them and not testing. The poultry club and persons wanting to have a tested flock are having to wait it out. I guess Jerry and others from the club are kicking up dirt about getting testers.
It will be awsome when you get a test kit, then you can come and offer tests at the chickenstocks! Woohoo.

perhaps I did open a can of worms by contacting Don (MSV), Bill (PT) , and the diagnostic lab in Orano, but to me, these people are only trying to better Maines flocks and keep everyone healthy, no big diseases getting out of control.

I was called a "fatalist" by a poultry club member. Fatalist to me is someone that makes up diseases or ways for a bird to die.
But testing proves these diseases or conditions, so isn't that being a realist?

Pure bred birds are not like a dog with paper work, akc register, they are only birds that meet the standards of the show qualifications. Then you want to breed that with only equal birds. If that makes sense. Anyways, I'm off on another whole issue!

Again, MainelySeramas, Thank you so much for your post, I appreciate it and I'm tickled that you are going to become a tester, that is so awsome!!!

UMMMM Spook! Yeah he did mention your name! LOL!

He has a GREAT sense of humor! He said he is looking forward to meeting you!!LOL!
I totally agree with you about testing your birds, to me it is insurance against diseases! Thats why so many flocks are dropping dead and no one knows why.
Bill told me, that the reason I have to be put on a list, is because YES there are testers out there, that are not testing and they are keeping the test kits!
Testing a bird is fairly easy, it only takes on small drop of blood from a vein under the wing feather and does not hurt the bird!
OMG! It's RAINING AGAIN!!!
